PRIEST RIVER — Bonners Ferry High senior Sydney Beckle won the 5,000-meter race in a time of 22 minutes and 16 seconds at the Ivan Benson Invite Saturday at Priest River Lamanna High School. 

Freshman Kylie Calderone (23:04) and junior Matisyn Stiern (23:06) finished second and third, respectively, to lead the Lady Badgers to the team title. 

On the boys' side Ethan Cowell was third with a time of 19 minutes and 28 seconds for Bonners Ferry, which finished second behind Kellogg. Senior Ryken White led the Wildcats to the team title, winning the meet in 19 minutes and 12 seconds. 

Boundary County Middle School cross-country also competed at Ivan Benson in the 1.5-mile race with both the boys and girls taking first place.  

Priest River and Bonners Ferry will compete at the Ben Castro Invitational set to be held Thursday at the Pinehurst Golf Course.

Badger volleyball “spikes” experience at tournament 

SPOKANE — Badger volleyball gained a lot of experience and faced many Washington and Idaho teams at the Sheridan-Welch Crossover Classic held Sept. 27-18 at various Spokane area high schools. 

Central Valley 2, BF 0 

Central Valley (4-6, 0-3) of the 3A/4A Greater Spokane League defeated Bonners Ferry, 25-18, 25-23.  

1A Troy (18-1, 11-0) of the White Pine league defeated Bonners 2-0, going 25-23, 25-20 in a tight contest.  

4A Wesco Jackson (9-7, 1-2) from Mill Creek, Wash., defeated Bonners 2-0 going 25-22, 25-21. 

The Reardan (8-2, 5-0) Screaming Eagles of the 2B Bi-County league defeated Bonners 2-0, going 25-23, 25-18.  

The Badgers then went on a three-game run, defeating the  

1A St. John Bosco Academy Patriots (3-6, 3-4) of the White Pine league, East Valley Knights (1-7, 1-2) of the 3A/4A Greater Spokane League and Mt. Spokane (3-4, 2-1) of the 3A/4A Greater Spokane League. 

Volleyball will travel to 5A Moscow (4-7) on Oct. 5. Moscow is a nonleague opponent in every sport, except football.  

The Badger Volley for a Cure game which fundraises for a local cancer organization, is scheduled for Oct. 10, hosting Timberlake for the first game of league play.  

Gate fees and a silent auction will go toward the purchase of gas cards to help local residents with cancer to travel to appointments.  

Bye week for football, league rankings

Badger football (2-3) had a bye week and will travel to 3A Kellogg (2-3, 2-0) on Friday, Oct. 4. 

This year, due to the classification changes, Bonners Ferry, Timberlake and the Intermountain League moved to 4A. Moscow went up to 5A but has petitioned down a league for football and is now in the 4A IML, which is allowed by the new classification.  

League contests for the 4A IML have yet to start. Currently, all three teams have only played St. Maries (0-5). 

Timberlake (2-4) defeated St. Maries on Sept. 27, 61-16. The Lumberjacks final made a notch on the score board in the fourth quarter.  

Moscow defeated St. Maries 49-13 on Sept. 20. The Bears rushed 217 yards, 128 receiving yards for 357 all-purpose yards.  

The Badgers defeated the Lumberjacks, 24-22 and rushed for 176 yards, 93 receiving yards and 269 all-purpose yards on Sept. 6. Bonners Ferry has since increased the number of yards gained with each game.
