PREP SWIMMING: Sandpoint duals Skyline at YMCA

MAX OSWALD | Hagadone News Network | UPDATED 6 months, 4 weeks AGO
by MAX OSWALD
I grew up in the small town of Orwigsburg, Pa., where I resided all of my life before moving to Sandpoint. I attended Blue Mountain High School, where I participated in cross country and track and field, a sport that I ended up falling in love with. I went on to attend and run for DeSales University (with other brief stints at Susquehanna University and Elizabethtown College) and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in sport communication with a minor in sport management. I remember just how great it made me feel when I was mentioned in my hometown newspaper. I want to be able to give that feeling to every athlete in Bonner County, no matter how big or small their accomplishments are. As an athlete myself, I know how many hours of work are put in on a daily basis, and that hard work deserves to be recognized. It is my goal to cover as much of the Bulldogs, Spartans and Wampus Cats as I can. I want to work with every athlete, parent, coach, administrator and the community to ensure the best stories are published. | October 11, 2024 9:00 PM

SANDPOINT — Sophomore Reina Montecchi, senior Ava de Leeuw and freshman Lou Foust all won two individual events each as the Sandpoint High swim team competed in a hotly contested dual against Skyline on Friday at the Litehouse YMCA.

Montecchi won the 50 free and 100 free, de Leeuw the 200 free and 400 free, Foust the 400 free and 100 back. Sandpoint's girls fell just two points shy of the visiting Grizzlies, 85-83, while the boys also fell by a small margin, 91-79.

"I'm really excited with Ava de Leeuws attitude, Sandpoint High head coach Greg Jackson said. "Her outlook on the sport and her races has shifted this year, which I think will greatly improve her success throughout this season."

Jackson also said freshman Bodi Demmons and juniors Kale Wright and Kai Leavitt had good days in the pool.

"Great job to Bodi Demmons today; he has been working hard to perfect his backstroke, and it really showed," coach Jackson said. "There has been a lot of technical work we've been working on that the swimmers demonstrated well today. I think the way Kale and Kai persevered with the faulty starting system in their 50 free shows their determination."

Sandpoint recognized their four seniors during Friday's lone home meet of the year, and Jackson said it's bittersweet having to lose another set of them.

"We have a great group of four, each with their own unique contributions to the program," coach Jackson said. "This year was especially special as I reflected on how some of them have helped me grow and improve as a coach."
