5A STATE GOLF: Sandpoint girls stay consistent, finish third

by MAX OSWALD
I grew up in the small town of Orwigsburg, Pa., where I resided all of my life before moving to Sandpoint. I attended Blue Mountain High School, where I participated in cross country and track and field, a sport that I ended up falling in love with. I went on to attend and run for DeSales University (with other brief stints at Susquehanna University and Elizabethtown College) and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in sport communication with a minor in sport management. I remember just how great it made me feel when I was mentioned in my hometown newspaper. I want to be able to give that feeling to every athlete in Bonner County, no matter how big or small their accomplishments are. As an athlete myself, I know how many hours of work are put in on a daily basis, and that hard work deserves to be recognized. It is my goal to cover as much of the Bulldogs, Spartans and Wampus Cats as I can. I want to work with every athlete, parent, coach, administrator and the community to ensure the best stories are published. | October 12, 2024 9:30 PM

BURLEY — For the third consecutive year, the Sandpoint High girls, led by seniors Taylor Mire and Alexa Tuinstra, are headed home with a third place trophy after the 5A State Golf Tournament concluded on Saturday at the River's Edge Golf Course.

The Lady Bulldogs put up consistent team scores of 353-354 between both rounds to remain steady in third. On day two, Tuinstra finished with a team-best 7-over-par 82 and placed 13th while Mire shot an 84 en route to an eighth place finish.

"All the girls finished in the upper half of all competitors," Sandpoint High head coach Mike Deprez said. "While missing claiming a championship, the girls proved to themselves at districts how good they are and can be."

For the boys, juniors Logan Roos and Everett Gilman carded 14-over par 86s during the second round as the Bulldogs finished 11th overall.

"The real victory for the boys was experience for the future and showing 'resilience shooting' for two days on very fast, unfamiliar greens," coach Deprez said. "State was well run and the course was in great shape."
