SANDPOINT — Kaniksu Land Trust is being honored by the Greater Sandpoint Chamber of Commerce as its organization of the month.
The land trust is a community-driven organization dedicated to land conservation and stewardship in the North Idaho and northwestern Montana regions. Its mission focuses on preserving natural landscapes for the benefit of wildlife, ecosystems, and local communities. The trust aims to protect open spaces, foster connections between people and nature, and ensure these lands remain accessible and sustainable for future generations.
Among KLT’s recent accomplishments in the Sandpoint area include several community-focused conservation efforts. A notable achievement is the establishment and ongoing development of the Pine Street Woods, a 180-acre property near Sandpoint that provides public access to trails, recreational spaces, and educational programs. This project enhances outdoor opportunities for the local community, promoting engagement with nature and conservation.
KLT has also spearheaded the "Save the Sled Hill" campaign in Sandpoint, successfully raising funds to preserve this cherished local landmark for community use, ensuring future generations have access to this recreational space.
In addition, KLT continues to work on conservation easements in the surrounding areas, protecting important wildlife habitats and maintaining the ecological health of key watersheds in the Priest River and Priest Lake regions.
KLT Executive Director Katie Cox and her team were celebrated at the Chamber’s October General Membership Luncheon on Thursday, Oct. 10.
