Libby hosting Western A Cross Country Championships

Libby and Cabinet View Golf Course are hosting the 2024 Western A Fall Classic Cross Country Championships Friday afternoon.

The field will include teams from Bigfork, Browning, Butte Central, Columbia Falls, Corvallis, Dillon, Frenchtown, Hamilton, Polson, Ronan, Stevensville, Whitefish and the host Loggers.

The top seven finishers in the varsity boys and girls races will qualify for the state championship Oct. 26 at the University of Montana golf course. There will also be two alternates who qualify, based on best times during the entire season.

Teams are allowed to enter a maximum of seven runners in the varsity races with the top five determining the score. 

The top 15 varsity boys and top 15 varsity girls will be awarded medals. The top two varsity boys and girls teams will receive trophies.

Before the varsity races, the junior varsity girls event begins at 2 p.m., followed by the jv boys race at 2:40. The girls varsity race is at 3:20 p.m. and the varsity boys run at 4 p.m.

Presentation of team and individual awards will be made following the

conclusion of all races at the old clubhouse.

Each race begins and ends on hole No. 11. 

Spectators are asked to stay off the greens and tee boxes. No pets or bikes are allowed on the course.

Libby’s top male runners are sophomore Cody Watson and senior Rowen Sherbo. Its top female runners are freshmen Capri Farmer and Alli Clemons.

In recent events, Watson was sixth at the Whitefish Invitational on Sept. 24 and Sherbo was 10th.

For the girls, Farmer was 10th at Whitefish and Clemons was 21st.

At the huge Mountain West Classic Sept. 28 in Missoula, Watson was 78th and Sherbo was 108th.

In the girls race, Farmer was 87th and Clemons was 153rd.

At the Mission Shadow Duals Oct. 12 in Pablo, Watson was third with a time of 16:45 while Sherbo was sixth in 17:08.

In the girls race, Clemons led Libby with a 12th place finish in 22:05.
