PREP FOOTBALL: Lakeland stymies Sandpoint’s playoff hopes
MAX OSWALD | Hagadone News Network | UPDATED 1 year, 1 month AGO
I grew up in the small town of Orwigsburg, Pa., where I resided all of my life before moving to Sandpoint. I attended Blue Mountain High School, where I participated in cross country and track and field, a sport that I ended up falling in love with. I went on to attend and run for DeSales University (with other brief stints at Susquehanna University and Elizabethtown College) and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in sport communication with a minor in sport management. I remember just how great it made me feel when I was mentioned in my hometown newspaper. I want to be able to give that feeling to every athlete in Bonner County, no matter how big or small their accomplishments are. As an athlete myself, I know how many hours of work are put in on a daily basis, and that hard work deserves to be recognized. It is my goal to cover as much of the Bulldogs, Spartans and Wampus Cats as I can. I want to work with every athlete, parent, coach, administrator and the community to ensure the best stories are published. | October 18, 2024 9:55 PM
Lakeland 41, Sandpoint 7
RATHDRUM — Limited to just 198 yards of total offense, the visiting Bulldogs suffered their fifth straight loss after falling to the host Hawks 41-7 in a 5A Inland Empire League match at Lakeland High on Friday.
Lakeland stopped Sandpoint on fourth down-and-1 during both the Bulldogs' first and third drives of the game, and quickly got out to a 13-0 lead by the end of the first quarter and then a 20-0 lead by halftime.
In the second half, Lakeland's Lovie Weil, who had two touchdowns in the first half, added two more in the second to help Lakeland to a 41-0 advantage. Weil finished the game with four scores and 203 rushing yards on 22 carries.
The Bulldogs were able to get on the board with 6:19 remaining in the game when junior Braden Buckhout found junior Dallen Williams for a 15-yard passing touchdown.
On defense, Lakeland held Sandpoint to just 96 rushing yards, recovered a fumble and recovered an unintentional onside kick — both which happened during the third quarter. Sandpoint was not able to force a turnover in the contest.
On offense for Sandpoint, Buckhout was six-for-nine passing for 66 yards while senior Drew Lehman, who had 36 yards passing, rushed for a team-high 29 yards. Senior Jesse Turner paced the Bulldogs in receptions with four to go along with 51 receiving yards.
Sandpoint, unless granted an at-large bid to the 5A state tournament, will officially end the season with a 3-6 record.
