COLUMBIA BASIN — There's plenty happening in the Basin this week. Here are a few things to mark on the calendar. 

Oct. 25

L&I Information Night

Join Latino Civic Alliance in partnership with the Washington State Department of Labor and Industries for an informative question-and-answer session with an L&I representative. 6-8 p.m. at the Latino Civic Alliance office, 821 W. Broadway, Ste. 203, Moses Lake. Info: 509-985-6814.

Oct. 25-26

Household hazardous waste collection

Items accepted include paint, paint thinners, aerosols, gasoline, yard chemicals, automotive fluids, pool chemicals, rechargeable batteries, fire extinguishers and more. Household waste only – no commercial or contractor waste accepted. 12-3 p.m. Oct. 25 at 24378 Broadway Ave., Mattawa and 12-3 p.m. Oct. 26 at 121781 E. Wheeler Road, Moses Lake. Moravida Festival

Moravida is a celebration of life inspired by the rich traditions of Dia de los Muertos. There will be family-friendly activities, live entertainment, children’s crafts, diverse food vendors, and much more. This event is open to all and free to attend. 11 a.m.-7 p.m. at the Grant County Fairgrounds, 3953 Airway Drive NE, Moses Lake. Info: www.gcfairgrounds.com.

Sonny’s Tavern 1st Birthday and Branding Party

Celebrate the first full year of the reboot of southeastern Adams County’s gathering place. Attendees are invited to bring a branding iron to make their mark on the wall. Samaritan Pediatrics meet-and-greet

Nov. 1

'Murder at the Ballet'

Ballet Fantastique and Columbia Basin Allied Arts present the world’s first interactive murder mystery ballet, where the audience shapes the story’s end with real-time choose-your-own-adventure elements. It’s a dark and stormy night in 1888 for London’s Les Etoiles Ballet Company theater, a thrilling new sort of penny dreadful innovation in the era of Jack the Ripper. Thurston Wolfe Winery expands staff

PROSSER — Collin Meharg has joined the staff of Thurston Wolfe Winery as assistant winemaker. Meharg joins co-owner and winemaker Wade Wolfe and assistant winemaker Chris Wright. Meharg, a graduate of Central Washington University, said he got interested in winemaking because of his interest in chemistry. “I was a teaching assistant in the lab at CWU for two years and that piqued my interest,” he said in a press release announcing his hiring. He likes almost any kind of wine, he said, but has a preference for wine that’s more acidic.

WSU selects Elizabeth ‘Betsy’ Cantwell as new president of university

PULLMAN — Elizabeth “Betsy” Cantwell has been appointed as the 12th president of Washington State University, following a comprehensive nationwide search that identified over 260 candidates, according to a statement from the university. Cantwell is set to officially assume her role on April 1, succeeding Kirk Schulz, who has served as president since 2016 and who will continue as a senior advisor during the transition until June 2025. The WSU Board of Regents unanimously selected Cantwell during their recent meeting.
