PREP SOCCER: Fantozzi scores late as Coeur d'Alene boys top Lake City

COEUR d’ALENE — Jaxon Fantozzi scored the game’s lone goal off a scramble in front of the net in the 79th minute, lifting the host Coeur d’Alene Vikings past the Lake City Timberwolves 1-0 in Inland Empire League play Saturday at Viking Field. 

Keaton Gust’s corner kick rattled around a group of players in front of the net and eventually landed at the feet of Fantozzi, who slotted it home from the penalty kick marker. 

“It was a great feeling, especially to see how hard they worked, to come away with a win,” Coeur d'Alene coach Robbie Harmelink said.  

Shots on goal were even at six, with Lake City (2-1-1, 1-1-0 IEL) having more of the scoring chances in the first half, Coeur d’Alene (3-0-0, 2-0-0) more in the second half, Harmelink said. 

Temperatures pushed 90 degrees — even warmer on the artificial turf — for the 1 p.m. start, and the teams took a water break midway through each half. 

“Changing to a 90-degree day on the turf was definitely a shock to the system, Harmelink said. 

The teams are scheduled to meet again Sept. 24 at Lake City, then in a best-of-3 series for the 6A Region 1 title and the region’s lone berth to state. 

Lake City plays host to Post Falls on Tuesday in an IEL game. 

Coeur d’Alene is home against Sandpoint on Thursday in a league game.

COEUR d’ALENE — In her brief time with the Lake City program, sophomore Addy Kerley hadn’t quite found the back of the net for all her efforts on the field.

On Saturday, she scored her first goal, then assisted on another to help pace the Timberwolves past the Vikings in an Inland Empire League match at the Irma Anderl Soccer Complex.

“It was great to see Addy find that success today,” said Lake City coach Matt Ruchti of Kerley, who transferred from Pocatello High after the school season concluded last fall. “She hadn’t found that success in her game minutes this year, but I was really impressed with how she played today.”

Kerley assisted on a goal by Chloe Burkholder in the 41st minute for Lake City (3-0-1, 2-0 IEL), which travels to Post Falls for a league match on Tuesday.

“I was really impressed with our back line today,” Ruchti said. “We had some good movement and created a few opportunities and should have had a few more goals.”

Coeur d’Alene (0-3, 0-2) faces Sandpoint on Thursday at War Memorial Field in Sandpoint.

“This was a really good game for us,” Coeur d’Alene coach Andy Vredenburg said. “The result doesn’t reflect how the game went. We just got caught with a couple of mistakes, but that’s easy to fix. We just couldn’t capitalize on our chances. Each game, the girls have improved. We fought, competed and definitely on the path that we want to go.”
