The reigning Class A state champion Whitefish Bulldogs traveled to Billings to kick off the soccer season last weekend, topping Lockwood 6-1.

Head coach Eric Sawtelle said the game was physical and sloppy at the beginning. 

“Lockwood started with a lot of intensity, and it took us a while to grow into the game,” head coach Eric Sawtelle said. “Eventually, we found a decent rhythm and space to move the ball and create opportunities.” 

Senior Logan Bingham scored first with a well-timed run and an assist from Elijah-Adams Griffin. 

“Logan played very well and showed strong senior leadership throughout the weekend,” Sawtelle said.  

Juniors Griffin Johnson and Jack Oehlerich each scored twice, and sophomore Kyler Jonson contributed one to the effort. Coach said Johnson had a strong showing both in the midfield and as a forward. The Bulldogs had 15 shots on goal and eight corner kicks. 

“It was a good start for this young team,” Sawtelle said. “Overall, it was a good first runout of the season.”

On Saturday, Whitefish took on the Billings Central Rams and lost a tight game, 2-1. 

“We knew this game was going to be a battle and we are proud of the way our boys started the game,” Sawtelle said. “They brought the passion and energy we expect and showed we are back and ready to compete.” 

Fifteen minutes into the game, the Bulldogs gave up a free kick outside the box which led to the Rams’ first goal. Billings scored again soon thereafter with a quick counterattack. 

"Our boys were able to maintain their composure and continued to generate opportunities,” Sawtelle said. “Our midfielders Logan Bingham, Elijah Adams-Griffin, Griffin Gunlikson and Kyler Jonson all put in very strong shifts.”  

Sawtelle said senior Justis Arterbury worked hard throughout the game and created the opportunity that led to Tristan Irwin’s goal 25 minutes into the second half. While both teams continued to battle, Whitefish was unable to score the tying goal.

“Overall, we walked away from this game with our heads held high,” Sawtelle said. “I have no doubt we will continue to work hard in practice and will grow and improve as a unit each week.  It's going to be an exciting and competitive season.” 

The boys team play Stevensville at home on Tuesday, Sept. 3. The public is welcome to cheer for the Bulldogs at Smith Fields at 5 p.m.
