PREP SOCCER: McCrum, Barnes net two goals each in Sandpoint girls win over Lakeland

I grew up in the small town of Orwigsburg, Pa., where I resided all of my life before moving to Sandpoint. I attended Blue Mountain High School, where I participated in cross country and track and field, a sport that I ended up falling in love with. I went on to attend and run for DeSales University (with other brief stints at Susquehanna University and Elizabethtown College) and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in sport communication with a minor in sport management. I remember just how great it made me feel when I was mentioned in my hometown newspaper. I want to be able to give that feeling to every athlete in Bonner County, no matter how big or small their accomplishments are. As an athlete myself, I know how many hours of work are put in on a daily basis, and that hard work deserves to be recognized. It is my goal to cover as much of the Bulldogs, Spartans and Wampus Cats as I can. I want to work with every athlete, parent, coach, administrator and the community to ensure the best stories are published. | September 10, 2024 9:20 PM

Sandpoint 6, Lakeland 1

SANDPOINT — Senior Marlee McCrum and junior Hope Barnes scored twice each and Sandpoint scored six unanswered goals in their five-goal 5A Inland Empire League win over Lakeland on Tuesday at War Memorial Field.

After Lakeland struck first, Elia Howard broke free during the 21st minute for her first goal of the season to tie the game 1-1. Senior Ayla Hull scored her first goal of the season, a header in front of the net, just five minutes later to give Sandpoint their first lead.

Barnes would score two, late first-half goals and McCrum during the 36th and 65th minutes to seal the deal. Junior Ava Glahe, junior Mackenzie Mitchell and freshman Willow Betz all recorded assists for the Lady Bulldogs. In addition to their goals, Barnes added two assists, McCrum one of her own, in what was a balanced effort for Sandpoint.

"The girls really clicked, we had a couple of good moments — team goals built through the midfield," Sandpoint High head coach Alan Brinkmeier said. "After some training sessions of crossing and going out wide, things are starting to click for us. We have a good streak going and feels good to get another league win."

Hall scores twice, Bulldogs squeak by Hawks

Sandpoint 4, Lakeland 3

RATHDRUM — Junior Huxley Hall scored a goal in each half and Sandpoint, down 2-1 early, found a way to defeat Lakeland by a goal in a 5A Inland Empire League match held Tuesday at the Sunrise Rotary Fields.

Junior Jack Treman started off the scoring for the Bulldogs during the 11th minute, receiving a nice pass from senior Luke Leavitt and scoring from just outside the box. Hall knotted up the score at two during the 31st minute off a pass from freshman Pax Longanecker. Before the half ended, Leavitt scored on a penalty kick to give Sandpoint a one goal lead.

In the second half, Hall scored again, assisted by Leavitt, and the Bulldogs held on for an eventual 4-3 victory.

“Overall we struggled to convert our chances into goals,” Sandpoint High head coach Dan Anderson said. “We were making a lot of simple mistakes that put our back line under more pressure than we would have liked. We’re looking for more discipline and better decision making going forward. Tonight’s positive is that we were able to give minutes to everyone on the team and got another league victory.”

Sandpoint (3-2-1) will travel to Lake City on  Thursday.
