SCFD2 gets new wheels

KELLOGG — There’s nothing like that new car smell, or in this case, that new firetruck smell.
On Thursday, Shoshone County Fire District No. 2 received its new Rosenbauer Maverick fire engine, effectively filling the district’s fleet of response vehicles.
SCFD1 Chief Scott Dietrich was excited, largely because the new vehicle is designed for more rural areas as opposed to the traditional firetruck.
“It’s not a cab-over style, instead it’s more of semitruck style,” Dietrich said. “They’re just better off road than the others are. This is good because we respond to a lot of rural calls."
This is the second Maverick purchased by the district in recent years. The addition of the new truck allows them to have one in each of the district’s two fire stations.
The truck cost about $450,000, which according to Dietrich was a competitive price. A mechanical failure of the district's former vehicles made the purchase necessary.
The district will also be moving on from one of their older engines to make room for the new Maverick.
“It’s a little worn out, but it’s still in service,” Dietrich said. “We’ll probably sell it, basically give it away to a smaller fire department that needs an additional vehicle.”
Shoshone County Fire District No. 2, which has stations in Kellogg and Pinehurst, is expecting to receive a new ambulance next month, which will complete their fleet of emergency response vehicles.
