XC: Badger girls lead pack and take first

BONNERS FERRY — Badger girls cross country took first at their home meet on Saturday, Sept. 14, with Sydney Beckle, Matisyn Stiern and Kylie Calderone taking top honors in the race.
Beckle won the girls race with a time 21:26
Stiern followed at 22:01, taking second and Calderone, freshman took third at 23:05.
In the boys race, Priest River’s Brayden Lamanna finished in first at 17:04 and taking fourth was Ethan Cowell, top Bonners Ferry boy placer at 19:30.
Despite fighting stomach issues, Micah Thomson finished with a time of 20:12, taking seventh and Colton Cohen followed at 20:14, allowing the Badger boys to finish in second.
Bonners Ferry head coach, Lyndsay Hart said that runners were fending off sickness on Saturday.
“Colton Cohen was only two seconds off his PR on a notoriously difficult course, and despite a fall (he tripped on a root),” Hart said. “Cheyenne Schuttes ran a great race, pulling away from the pack she often finds herself in. Kylie Calderon also edged out an opponent right in the last few meters to secure a 1,2,3 medal sweep for the Badger women.”
The Badgers will compete at Thompson Falls, Mt on Saturday.
“We have never been to this Thompson Falls invite before, so are excited to see a new course and different competition with most teams being from Montana,” she said. “We are preparing by resting to overcome the cold that’s going around and continuing our strength and mobility training for sore hips and knees. My goal has always been to build up for October, and that’s what we will continue to train for.”
