Gridiron Guesses Sept. 26, 2024: Short turnaround for Lakeland this week

Coeur d'Alene Press | UPDATED 1 year, 11 months AGO
| September 26, 2024 1:20 AM

A few years ago, a shortage of officials in District 1 (basically from Plummer north) meant some high school football games had to be moved from Friday to Saturday or Thursday.

This year, that problem has popped up in District 2 (roughly the Lewiston-Moscow area).

For the second time this year, a matchup with a District 1 team traveling to a District 2 team has had to be moved.

Tonight, it's Lakeland at Moscow, moved up a day and slated for a 7 p.m. kickoff at Bear Field.

Normally, this would be a league game, but Moscow petitioned down one classification in football for the next two seasons after some recent struggles.

This year, the Bears are off to a 5-0 start.

Lakeland (3-2) will be without head coach Mike Schroeder and offensive coordinator Tony Porter, who each have been suspended one game. Lakeland athletic director Matt Neff confirmed the suspensions, declining to get into specifics.

The remainder of this week's games will be previewed in Friday's Press.

As for the picks .....

TONIGHT'S GAME

Lakeland (3-2) at Moscow (5-0), 7 p.m.

NELKE: After beating Kellogg, Caldwell, Clarkston, Pullman and St. Maries, the Bears face their toughest test yet in a Lakeland squad that took Post Falls to the wire last week. The only question — how will the Hawks react, on the road, without their head coach and offensive coordinator?

Lakeland, 21-18

ELLIOTT: Lakeland handled Moscow in last year's game at Corbit Field in Rathdrum. For as impressive as Moscow has looked so far ...

Lakeland, 28-24

McDONALD: The Bears have been on a tear, but Lakeland seems like they could be on another level. This will be a good game to watch if you want to see a good secondary versus an air raid offense.

Lakeland, 28-21
