PREP SOCCER: Gion, Hall lift Sandpoint boys to league win over Moscow

I grew up in the small town of Orwigsburg, Pa., where I resided all of my life before moving to Sandpoint. I attended Blue Mountain High School, where I participated in cross country and track and field, a sport that I ended up falling in love with. I went on to attend and run for DeSales University (with other brief stints at Susquehanna University and Elizabethtown College) and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in sport communication with a minor in sport management. I remember just how great it made me feel when I was mentioned in my hometown newspaper. I want to be able to give that feeling to every athlete in Bonner County, no matter how big or small their accomplishments are. As an athlete myself, I know how many hours of work are put in on a daily basis, and that hard work deserves to be recognized. It is my goal to cover as much of the Bulldogs, Spartans and Wampus Cats as I can. I want to work with every athlete, parent, coach, administrator and the community to ensure the best stories are published. | September 27, 2024 11:15 PM

BOYS

Sandpoint 2, Moscow 0

MOSCOW — Caiden Gion and Huxley Hall both scored goals in the second half as the visiting Bulldogs clinched a two-goal 5A Inland Empire League victory Friday at Moscow High.

Gion found the back of the net during the 55th minute off a free kick from junior Jack Treman. The goal went off the hands of Moscow keeper and in for the junior defender's first goal of the season. After Moscow was handed a red card due to the accumulation of two yellow’s during the 70th minute, fellow junior Huxley Hall was able to capitalize with two minutes remaining in the contest off a cross from freshman Gus Penrose, which all but sealed the win.

“We started slow; Moscow’s a hard place to play at and get a result,” Sandpoint High head coach Dan Anderson said. “We weathered an initial barrage, but certainly grew into the game and got better as time went on. We got ahold of the ball, maintained possession, and ended the first half strong and finished things off in the second.”

Anderson said the back line played well to help ensure the victory, which locked up Sandpoint as the No. 1 seed heading into district playoffs.

Sandpoint (6-3-2) hosts Lewiston today at noon.

1st half — None. 2nd half — 1, SPT, Caiden Gion (Jack Treman), 55’. 2, SPT, Huxley Hall (Gus Penrose), 78’.

Shots on goal: SPT — 10. MOS — 6.

Saves: SPT — Landon Brinkmeier 5, Gavan Miles 1. MOS — Unknown 8.

GIRLS

Moscow 1, Sandpoint 0

MOSCOW — In a 5A Inland Empire League match held Friday at Moscow High, the host Lady Bears took down the visiting Lady Bulldogs for the second time this season.

Sandpoint only mustered up a total of three shots, one of which was on goal.

“I would simply say Moscow wanted it more; they played with intention to win and host the district semifinal,” Sandpoint High head coach Alan Brinkmeier said. “We more than likely will travel for both games for districts this year, and maybe that is what this team needs — the pressure is always on the host, and we get the chance to play upset.”

Sandpoint (5-4-1) won’t have much time to dwell, as they travel to Lewiston today at noon.
