PREP TRACK & FIELD: Lamanna continues to climb Priest River High record books

by MAX OSWALD
I grew up in the small town of Orwigsburg, Pa., where I resided all of my life before moving to Sandpoint. I attended Blue Mountain High School, where I participated in cross country and track and field, a sport that I ended up falling in love with. I went on to attend and run for DeSales University (with other brief stints at Susquehanna University and Elizabethtown College) and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in sport communication with a minor in sport management. I remember just how great it made me feel when I was mentioned in my hometown newspaper. I want to be able to give that feeling to every athlete in Bonner County, no matter how big or small their accomplishments are. As an athlete myself, I know how many hours of work are put in on a daily basis, and that hard work deserves to be recognized. It is my goal to cover as much of the Bulldogs, Spartans and Wampus Cats as I can. I want to work with every athlete, parent, coach, administrator and the community to ensure the best stories are published. | April 4, 2025 7:50 PM

DEER PARK — The hard work is paying off for Priest River High senior Brayden Lamanna.

The Spartans' prodigy distance runner, who already holds the school record in the 5,000-meter run (XC) and the 3,200-meter run, ran to a No. 2 all-time best Friday in the 1,600-meter run at the Glenn Wolf Invite hosted by Deer Park High.

Lamanna's time of 4:33.43 earned gold out of 59 competitors, was a personal best by over two seconds, and sits at just .44 seconds behind Cameron York's school record of 4:32.99 set in 1991. He also competed in the 800-meter run, taking third out of 45 with a new personal best time of 2:05.49.

Niki Porinchok continued his stellar junior campaign, placing first out of 64 in the discus throw with a mark of 148 feet 3.5 inches. Porinchok, who has placed first in the discus in all three of the invitationals he's competed in so far this season, also clinched second out of 60 in the shotput with a hurl of 41 feet 11 inches.

Senior Luccas Simcox was third out of 63 in the long jump (19 feet 5.5 inches) while fellow senior Carter Korff was fourth in the long jump (19 feet 5.25 inches), ninth out of 128 in the 100-meter dash (11.97 seconds) and eighth out of 75 in the 200-meter dash with a new personal best (24.45 seconds).

Junior Ian Lamanna added a fifth-place finish out of 28 in the pole vault (11 feet even) and ran to a new personal best and finished eighth out of 53 in the 400-meter dash (54.84 seconds) for the Spartans, which finished fifth out of 23 scoring teams with 54.5 points.

For the girls, senior Lizzie McCracken posted a new personal best in the 800-meter run, placing third out of 28 with a time of 2:34.05. She also placed 14th out of 33 in the 1,600-meter run (6:10.96) on the day.

On the field, senior Kylee Swoboda tied for sixth out of 24 in the high jump (4 feet 8 inches) and sophomore Ashlynn Korff was tied for 10th out of 50 in the long jump (14 feet 2.5 inches) for the Lady Spartans, which placed 13th out of 22 scoring teams with 16.5 points.
