MATTAWA — Volunteers are being sought to pick up trash around public areas in Mattawa beginning at 8 a.m. Saturday. Cleanup will last all morning.

It’s separate from the citywide cleanup for residents that’s also this weekend.

Mattawa Mayor Maria Celaya said the assembly point is Mattawa City Hall, 521 Government Road, and volunteer teams will fan out from there.

“We have some groups (of volunteers). I know there are a few churches who have signed up already to volunteer,” Celaya told Mattawa City Council members April 3.

Maps will be provided to help guide volunteers around town.

City officials are asking for donations of latex gloves, garbage bags and bottled water for volunteers, Celaya said. People who want to donate can drop items off at Mattawa City Hall during business hours.

Local hospitals face 'challenging financial landscape' after Big Beautiful Bill passage

MOSES LAKE — The recent approval of new federal Medicaid rules will affect local hospitals and medical providers. What that impact will be, however, is still unclear. “So much is still unknown,” Glenda Bishop, chief executive officer for Quincy Valley Medical Center, wrote in reply to an email from the Columbia Basin Herald. “We simply do not have enough data to predict with accuracy any outcomes.”
