In what is their first year of Montana varsity high school baseball, the Plains-Hot Springs Savage Horsemen team is getting a rude introduction to Western B-C conference play.

After cancelling their season last year due to lack of players, the Savage Horsemen played their second game of the 2025 season in Eureka against the Lincoln County High Lions and left town with a 12-0 loss. 

The loss, coupled with their first game, 19-0 loss to Columbia Falls last week, left the Savage Horsemen still searching for their first varsity win. 

Plains was held scoreless in the top of the first, then watched as the Lions plated three runs in the bottom half of the inning. 

The same scoring scenario played out in the second inning, with Plains being held without a run in the top of the frame, while Eureka added three runs to give them a 6-0 lead. 

Plains was held without a run the rest of the game, while Eureka tacked on two runs in the bottom of the third and four runs in the bottom of the fourth.  The four-run fourth inning gave the Lions a 12-0 lead, invoking the 10-plus lead rule and ending the game after four and a half innings. 

The Savage Horsemen had just two hits for the game as both first baseman Wyatt Butcher and catcher Jackson Lucier each went 1-2 at the plate. 

Hunter Grieve led Eureka with five runs batted in while going 2-4 at the plate. 

Eureka, which squared its season mark at 2-2. 

After hosting Sanders County rival Noxon-Thompson Falls to begin this week, the Plains-Hot Springs crew host Whitefish this Friday (April 11) at 3 pm, at Amundson Sports Complex adjacent to the Plains airport.  They then take on Ronan in the same place this Saturday at 1 p.m.
