MOSES LAKE — The Moses Lake Mavericks came out on top in their game against Eastmont on Tuesday night with a 1-0 victory.

“Once in a while we have our downs, but today was up,” said Mavs’ Joaquin Cervantes. “I’ve seen a lot of our players give it our all and that’s what I’m proud of.”

The game was decided by a penalty kick that the Mavs were able to keep Eastmont from overcoming with two minutes left in the game.

“We’ve been practicing a couple of free kicks; we were able to get it,” said Mavs coach Miguel Segura. “We knew that the goalie would drop it, so we just had to make sure we followed the ball for the score.”

Going into the game, the team decided they had to pressure and cut off all of their opponents' options. Eastmont is usually a tough team that's hard to prepare for. However, the Mavs held their own with their strong mental fortitude that had them ready for anything, said Segura.

The coach added that Cervantes had a great performance in the team's victory against Eastmont. Cervantes held down the center which helped the team in making their pushes and prevented the opponent from making one themselves.

“What I’ve been working on is my first touch,” said Cervantes. “There were loose balls, and I carried it and advanced to where my game was better because I created plays.”

Cervantes said he had just returned from playing soccer in Spain where they taught him the importance of mastering first touch in a game.

The team is going to have to keep the same mentality and keep up the motivation that they showed against Eastmont, said the coach.

The Mavs will play their next game on the road against Sunnyside tomorrow at 7 p.m.

Ledger Archer makes a strong push toward the center.

Joaquin Cervantes said he returned from playing soccer in Spain with new knowledge on how he can work on first touches and applied it to this game.

Henry Pena kept the ball inside the field of play as the Mavs made their push toward the goal.

Juan Landeros gains control of the ball in great position for the Mavs to make an attempt at the goal.

Kyre Wiltbank prepares to kick the ball across the field to his awaiting teammates.

PJ Martin’s birthday was on Tuesday, and he celebrated with a team win and the crowd wishing him a happy birthday.

SOAP LAKE — The Soap Lake Eagles boys and girls tennis teams both fell 2-3 against Entiat Tuesday evening. After a long day of matchups going back and forth, the Eagles came just short of earning team victories on both sides. “It was good, that was our second time playing them, and I felt like the kids played a lot better,” said Eagles Head Coach Lee Leavell. “I was a little nervous with them coming back from break, but they responded pretty well and despite us losing, I was pretty happy with it.”
