MOSES LAKE — The Moses Lake Mavericks came out on top in their game against Eastmont on Tuesday night with a 1-0 victory.
“Once in a while we have our downs, but today was up,” said Mavs’ Joaquin Cervantes. “I’ve seen a lot of our players give it our all and that’s what I’m proud of.”
The game was decided by a penalty kick that the Mavs were able to keep Eastmont from overcoming with two minutes left in the game.
“We’ve been practicing a couple of free kicks; we were able to get it,” said Mavs coach Miguel Segura. “We knew that the goalie would drop it, so we just had to make sure we followed the ball for the score.”
Going into the game, the team decided they had to pressure and cut off all of their opponents' options. Eastmont is usually a tough team that's hard to prepare for. However, the Mavs held their own with their strong mental fortitude that had them ready for anything, said Segura.
The coach added that Cervantes had a great performance in the team's victory against Eastmont. Cervantes held down the center which helped the team in making their pushes and prevented the opponent from making one themselves.
“What I’ve been working on is my first touch,” said Cervantes. “There were loose balls, and I carried it and advanced to where my game was better because I created plays.”
Cervantes said he had just returned from playing soccer in Spain where they taught him the importance of mastering first touch in a game.
The team is going to have to keep the same mentality and keep up the motivation that they showed against Eastmont, said the coach.
The Mavs will play their next game on the road against Sunnyside tomorrow at 7 p.m.

Tigers pull off OT victory over Huskies
OTHELLO — The Ephrata Tigers (4-7-2) earned a competitive 3-2 overtime victory on the road against the Othello Huskies (5-6) Tuesday evening. Both teams are now looking to close out the regular season on high notes. “Great game, we had a tough first half trying to match them, they’re so fast up top and they have some really great through balls,” said Tigers Head Coach Gary Keplec. “We had trouble matching that and then we mixed things up in the second half, brought girls in and put girls in different places. We went back out and we challenged them.” The first half was strongly in favor of the Huskies. Othello held control of the ball for much of the time, putting pressure on Tigers goalkeeper junior Aiyana Valle, who made multiple key stops.
Vikings earn road victory over Wenatchee Friday
WENATCHEE — The Big Bend Community College Vikings (5-8) gained a competitive road win over the Wenatchee Valley College Knights (3-17). Both teams were looking to come back from losses, and the Vikings got back in the win column 3-0. “It was very exciting,” said Vikings Head Coach Lindsey Linthicum. “Our girls just came in with a fire in their belly, ready to compete and ready to take on Wenatchee.” The first set showed BBCC’s strength as they had nine total kills. While Wenatchee Valley battled hard, the Vikings gained a 25-20 victory to start the match.
