SANDPOINT — Sandpoint Library’s “Book Slayers,” comprising local students, topped the podium at an April 12 regional Idaho Battle of the Books competition hosted in Sandpoint.
A total of 14 teams from across North Idaho competed in the Saturday event; 25 staff and volunteers lent their time to help bring the battle to life.
Teams of students competing in Idaho Battle of the Books competitions are assigned a set of books to read ahead of the contest and offered an opportunity to study and discuss the material. During an event, competitors answer quiz questions and score points based on their ability to correctly recall details about the books.
Idaho Battle of the Books describes itself as a voluntary program designed to expose students to quality literature representing a variety of literary styles and viewpoints.
The program aims to encourage and recognize students who enjoy reading, share the love of reading with students who have not yet discovered it for themselves, and promote academic excellence and cooperative learning.
