Coeur d'Alene Press | UPDATED 11 months, 4 weeks AGO
| April 29, 2025 1:00 AM

Kylee Grace Herbst passed away April 20, 2025, at the age of 13, from complications related to her CDKL5 Deficiency Disorder, a rare neurological condition that severely impacts brain development.

Kylee was born Sept. 1, 2011, to Jennifer Mertens and Jacob Herbst. She loved her Elmo, who went to every procedure and doctor's appointment. Kylee also loved the ocean. No matter how sick she was, the sound of the waves seemed to calm her, and she could relax for a brief amount of time. Kylee absolutely loved her niece, Kennedy. They had a very special bond that was amazing to watch.

Kylee had a very spunky personality despite being completely nonverbal. We are all so very blessed to have had this beautiful, sweet and brave girl in our lives for 13 years. She has left an incredible mark on each of our hearts, as well as those who had the chance to get to know her. We are all the better for having had such a special girl in our lives, even though it was only for a short time. Even though Kylee struggled with medical issues since she was three weeks old, she was the toughest and bravest kid we knew. We never imagined we would all have to say goodbye to her so soon.

Survived by her mother, Jennifer Mertens (Rathdrum), father Jacob Herbst (Post Falls), sisters Trista Traver (Alex) and Ramie Herbst, nieces Kennedy and Kinsley Traver, paternal grandmother Susan Herbst, maternal grandparents Raymond and Marilyn Mertens, along with many aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. Kylee was preceded by her paternal grandfather, Adam Herbst, all her great-grandparents and a great-uncle.

Celebration of life for Kylee will be May 3 at 1 p.m., with a reception following: Real Life Ministries — North Campus, 30447 N. Roughstock Road Athol, ID 83801

Instead of wearing the traditional black. We would love for everyone to wear colorful clothing. Kylee loved her (red) Elmo and the beach.
