LBD fundraiser aims to help homeless

I grew up in the Tri-Cities, Wash., and have always loved to write. I attended the University of Washington, where I earned a double major in journalism and political science, with an area of emphasis in history. I am the fifth out of six kids — don't believe any of the stories that my siblings tell. To be able to tell others stories and take photos for a living is a dream come true — and I considered myself blessed to be a community journalist. When I am not working, I enjoy spending time with family and friends, hiking and spending time outdoors, genealogy, reading, and watching the UW Huskies and the Seattle Seahawks. I am a servant to my cat, Frankie, who yes, will eat anything and everything in sight … even wedding cookies. | April 29, 2025 1:00 AM

SANDPOINT — Finding yourself homeless can be filled with desperation.

Not long ago, Kate and Steve arrived from Utah, hoping to leave their drug problems behind. When staying with family didn’t work out, the couple bounced from motel to motel while searching for a program that would accept them and their three young children. They soon discovered that the only option that would keep the family together was Bonner Homeless Transitions.

BHT offered them more than just a safe place to live, the nonprofit officials said.

The family participated in programs designed to help residents become self-sufficient, such as budgeting and group therapy. They found employment — a requirement at BHT; they are working on training and education. They also undergo random drug testing and inspections — steps that help ensure their commitment to the program and their success.

Making Bonner Homeless Transitions' programs possible are events like Thursday's Little Black Dress Cocktails & Conversation Party at the Idaho Club.

The event begins at 5 p.m. at The Idaho Club Clubhouse and features a night of savory drinks, gourmet appetizers and conversations aimed at helping Bonner Homeless Transitions make a difference. The evening is dedicated to raising awareness and support for women and families transitioning out of homelessness.

“We are thrilled to host this special event, bringing the community together in a fun and stylish way to support individuals and families striving for a better future,” said Rebekah Little, executive director of BHT. “Every ticket purchased, every conversation had and every donation given helps transform lives.”

At the event, local artist Heather Mehra-Pedersen will be painting live at the fundraiser with the painting auctioned off at the end of the night to raise funds for BHT.

"I'm truly excited and humbled to be able to share the gift I’ve been blessed with and support Bonner Homeless Transitions and give back to the Sandpoint community that has supported me so well," she said. "I’m praying that my art will make a difference and grateful for the chance to contribute in such a meaningful way."

Bonner Homeless Transitions is a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing transitional housing and supportive services for individuals and families experiencing homelessness. Through housing, education and community support, BHT empowers people to regain stability and self-sufficiency.

"Kate and Steve can now visualize a road to success, but many others are still waiting for their chance. BHT operates three sites and employs five dedicated staff members, but we rely on community support to keep our doors open," BHT officials said.

Tickets are $50 and are available at fundraiser.support/lbd2025. For information about Bonner Homeless Transitions, go to bonnerhomelesstransitions.org.

'Tots' delivers cheer, holiday joy

Funds raised during the annual Toys for Tots Christmas campaign go to purchase new toys for area children — or gift cards for older youth — who live in the Lake Pend Oreille School District. Every Christmas, the Lions help almost 1,000 area children, from Sandpoint to Clark Fork and all points in between.
