Mavs best Davis

MOSES LAKE — The Moses Lake Mavericks softball team earned two victories in a doubleheader against Davis on Friday afternoon.
“I think that we just needed to come in here confident and that’s how we came in and played to our level,” said the Mavs' Addison Reffett.
Moses Lake won the first game 17-0, putting up six in the first inning after an error scored three runs, Amilia Borchert singled for two runs, and Hayden Morris singled for one. They put up seven runs in the second inning with Reffett, Caitlin Decubber, Borchert and Morris each getting runs.
Paige Richardson pitched for the Mavs in game one where she struck out 13 batters and gave up zero hits, runs and walks in the five innings played.
“I didn’t expect to do what I did out there and I’m just glad that I did,” said Richardson. “If I’m pitching good in the bullpen before the game, I’m locked in, but I do have some game day rituals.”
Game two had similar results. The Mavericks bested their opponent 30-0 by the end of the fourth inning with Decubber, Morris, Reffett, Jenika Balderas, and Lila Johnson each scoring multiple runs. Decubber stood on the mound where she struck out 11 batters and surrendered zero hits and zero runs while walking four.
“When we had to play defense, we played really solid defense,” said Coach Mike Hofheins. “Our pitchers were so on, though, that our defense didn’t have to make a ton of plays.”
After Friday’s doubleheader, the Mavs have an overall 11-4 record and are undefeated in league matches, putting them at the number one spot in the Big Nine conference. Hofheins said this is the point of the season where it gets fun, as they are now in the last two weeks with the league title up for grabs.
Currently, it is a race between Moses Lake, West Valley and Eastmont for the league title, with both the other teams sitting at a 7-1 league record. The team that executes its game plan and comes out to play the hardest in the coming weeks will be the one that earns the league title, said the coach.
“I’m pretty excited because we have our two toughest competitions coming up and I think as a team we’re all ready for it and just eager to get out there and show them what we can do,” said Reffett.
Richardson is one of the seniors on the team preparing for one last push with the Mavericks at a league title. She said she is ready to expect the unexpected in the coming weeks and is excited to see who is going to win the league title.
The team is preparing for a nonleague game against Hanford today, where they hope to build momentum going into their coming league doubleheader against West Valley. Playing Hanford will be a good test of their forged strength that they’ve built this season, said the coach.
The Mavs play at home against Hanford today at 5 p.m.

ACH falls into consolation bracket in state softball tournament
YAKIMA — The Almira/Coulee-Hartline Warriors fell 5-8 in the quarterfinal bracket to the Colton Wildcats during the 1B State tournament. With this loss, the Warriors continue their state bid in the consolation bracket as they battle for a chance at third place. “We came out strong as we needed to, got three runs in that first inning, and we shut them down,” said Warriors head coach Faye Butler. “Then I think the nerves and all the excitement got to us, did a couple overthrows and they had a good rally on us.” The Warriors started off strong with the three runs in the bottom of the first inning to gain a substantial lead over their opponent. ACH maintained this lead until the third inning as Colton tied up the score with three runs of their own.
