Locals help Vandal Baseball Club advance to regionals
The University of Idaho club baseball team, which includes four local players, recently won the Rocky Mountain North division, defeating a couple of conference foes, 16th-ranked Montana and Washington State, along the way.
Other teams in its conference are Eastern Washington, Central Washington and Utah State.
This is the first time the Vandals have won their division and qualified for regionals.
The four local players on the Idaho club team are Harrison Reid, Aiden Laponsey and Cole Pettit from Lake City High, and Kyle Seman from Coeur d’Alene High.
Laponsey is batting .408 (20 of 49) for Idaho (11-7) and Seman is 3-0 with a 3.91 ERA.
Idaho is currently ranked 20th in the nation in the National Club Baseball Association poll.
Idaho is the No. 2 seed for the four-team Rocky Mountain Regional playoff at Richard V. Hansen Ballpark in Smithfield, Utah. Idaho opens Friday at 2 p.m. PDT vs. No. 3 Colorado College. No. 4 Montana plays No. 1 Colorado State-Pueblo on Friday at 5 p.m. PDT.
Winners of the eight regional playoffs advance to the NCBA Division II World Series May 16-20 in Alton, Ill.
IHSAA to induct three into Hall of Fame
BOISE — Terry Beck (Eagle), Tim Perrigot (Wendell) and Steve Sosnowski (Capital) have been selected to be inducted into this year's class of the Idaho High School Activities Association Hall of Fame.
They will be honored at ceremonies during the 45th annual Hall of Fame banquet Wednesday, Aug. 6 at 6:30 p.m. MDT at the Boise Centre in downtown Boise.
Ticket information will be posted on the IHSAA website in June.
Other awards to be presented at the banquet include the Dick Fleischmann Memorial Award, the Wes Lowe Memorial Award and the Duane D. Wolfe Memorial Award. Distinguished Service Awards for each of the six activity districts, the Spirit of Sport Award and Official of the Year will also be presented. Those recipients will be announced at a later date.
Beck started as a teacher and coach in 1980, and worked at Boise High, Mountain Home, and most notably, 20 years as principal of Eagle High. Beck also served 25 years on the Third District Board of Control, including two decades as president. He's served as meet director for the 4A/5A state track meet for the past 12 years.
Dr. Perrigot began his career in 1992, serving in roles ranging from science teacher and football coach to principal and superintendent. He spent over 20 years at Minico High, leading the football team to 120-plus wins, nine conference titles, and 14 playoff appearances. Most recently, he served as superintendent of Wendell School District from 2018-25. He has been a longtime IHSAA Executive Board member and president.
Sosnowski was a teacher, coach, and athletic director at Firth, Meridian, and Capital high schools. His accolades include induction into the Idaho Athletic Administrators Association Hall of Fame (2023) and Capital High School Hall of Fame (2024).
