PREP ROUNDUP: Sandpoint softball scores nine in final frame to force split with Lewiston
MAX OSWALD | Hagadone News Network | UPDATED 7 months, 3 weeks AGO
I grew up in the small town of Orwigsburg, Pa., where I resided all of my life before moving to Sandpoint. I attended Blue Mountain High School, where I participated in cross country and track and field, a sport that I ended up falling in love with. I went on to attend and run for DeSales University (with other brief stints at Susquehanna University and Elizabethtown College) and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in sport communication with a minor in sport management. I remember just how great it made me feel when I was mentioned in my hometown newspaper. I want to be able to give that feeling to every athlete in Bonner County, no matter how big or small their accomplishments are. As an athlete myself, I know how many hours of work are put in on a daily basis, and that hard work deserves to be recognized. It is my goal to cover as much of the Bulldogs, Spartans and Wampus Cats as I can. I want to work with every athlete, parent, coach, administrator and the community to ensure the best stories are published. | April 29, 2025 1:00 AM
Extended recap from Sunday's paper
SOFTBALL
Lewiston 9, Sandpoint 8
Sandpoint 14, Lewiston 12
LEWISTON — Junior Hali Smotherman hit a go-ahead two-run triple in the top of seventh inning of game two and the visiting Lady Bulldogs beat the Lady Bengals for the first time since 2015, splitting a 5A Inland Empire League doubleheader Saturday at Airport Park.
Smotherman also had a double for Sandpoint, which scored nine runs in the final frame and shutout Lewiston in the bottom half of the inning to clinch the victory in the nightcap.
Junior Arah Stevens and senior Abi Miller had RBI singles during the 9-run rally and freshman Bailey Wilson supplied an RBI single earlier in the game to help the Lady Bulldogs' cause.
Freshman Marlee Stevens also recorded a multi-hit effort and secured the win on the mound, striking out six batters across seven innings of work.
It was a good win to get after Lewiston won the first game by just one run, using a 3-run final frame to walk things off. In the contest, senior Baylie Hindle, Marlee Stevens and freshman Avery Inge all had two hits apiece. Hindle plated two runs, Inge one between the third and fifth innings before the Lady Bengals made a comeback.
Wilson got the nod in game one and struck out six batters over six total innings.
"Bailey Wilson and Marlee Stevens really fought today and showed their maturity on the mound," Sandpoint High head coach Leah Platt said. "They also helped themselves out at the plate with some big hitting. There was fight and determination in all of the girls. They never gave up and really pulled together as a team."
Sandpoint (5-17, 3-13) is scheduled to host Post Falls for their regular season finale doubleheader Thursday.
