Best of Whitefish: Growing community with Two Bear Farm

Todd and Rebecca Ulizio of Two Bear Farm have been growing fresh, organic produce for the Whitefish community for 18 years. They are passionate about good food, caring for the land and raising awareness about people’s connection to the food they eat and the land it comes from.
They are also big believers in the value of small farms creating a vibrant community and connection. While it takes grit and a strong work-ethic to make a living growing vegetables in Montana, Ulizio is quick to point out that the key to their success has been community support.
“There are many places in America where communities no longer have local farms and the fresh food they provide, so it’s important for community members to be recognized for the role they play in supporting small businesses like Two Bear Farm,” Ulizio said.
Small businesses are what make Whitefish such a unique and vibrant place. Ulizio said many of them contribute to the community in ways that people don’t realize.
“If you make the effort to grow food for yourself or your community, at this time in history and in this climate, you are the Best of Whitefish,” said Ulizio.
He said The Wicked Good Farm, Three P’s Farm, Purple Frog Gardens, Earthstar Farm, White Star Organics, Snow Country Gardens, each deserve recognition for what they contribute to the community.
“If you are a community member who recognizes the value of fresh local food and are willing to support local farms, you are also the Best of Whitefish,” he added.
Two Bear Farm’s efforts to build and improve the local food system over the years is a testament to their values. They help provide organic food to over 43 local restaurants and markets through Wicked Good Produce. They work with Land to Hand Montana to get fresh snacks into local schools. They partner with North Valley Food Bank to improve their clients' access to fresh nutritious food.
Most recently, Two Bear Farm partnered with their friends at Wicked Good Produce to create The Farmers’ Stand in Whitefish, a market that supports many small businesses and regional farms while providing the community access to healthier choices.
At the heart of it all is their 250-member CSA program that delivers fresh vegetables directly to community members throughout the growing season.
