Buffalo Cafe was a clear crowd favorite in the 2025 Best of Whitefish competition. It won best breakfast, best customer service, best restaurant, best family restaurant, best social media content and best server, Abbey Parr.

Parr was born and raised in Whitefish and has worked at the Buffalo since 2008. She enjoys her job because of the owners’ vibe and the connections she makes with the community through her customers.

“The family that owns the restaurant, they're just good people to work for, and they really take care of everybody,” Parr said. “And then the customers, I mean, you get that relationship with all of them.”

The beloved restaurant also garnered second place as most philanthropic business and the place with the most charm. Its burger earned third place and its burrito was a runner up. Chef Ruben, server Jade, and community star and co-owner, Alex Maetzold, were all runner ups.

Maetzold and his brother, Andy, run the establishment their parents started in the late 1970s and offer full service in a casual atmosphere.

“It’s fun to get to work with my brother. We grew up in here and now we’re doing it, and our folks can see us,“ Maetzold said. “We don't plan on going anywhere. This is our this is our job. This is our spot.”

It makes sense the awards were so numerous and varied. The Buffalo itself is not just a place for great food. It is a meeting place, a hub, an anchor for the community.

"I feel like the Buffalo is a bit of a bridge in town,” Maetzold said. “We can't turn away from the newness that's going on, but you got to respect what got us here in the old locals and even new locals.

“I think it's nice to honor both sides of that - know where we've been but see where it's going and bring everybody with you,” Maetzold added.

The inclusive philosophy of the business is evident by its treatment of customers and its involvement in the community. The Buffalo often fundraises for local nonprofits.
