PREP BASEBALL: Coeur d'Alene rallies past Lake City again
Coeur d'Alene Press | UPDATED 7 months, 4 weeks AGO
COEUR d’ALENE — Facing a 7-3 deficit entering the bottom of the sixth inning, first-year Coeur d’Alene coach Brandon Williams had the Vikings change their thinking at the plate against the Lake City Timberwolves.
“Once we got down, we started to have them take a pitch just to see it and have a game plan,” Williams said. “We’ve done this before and have had this come up a few times on Lake City. We just wanted them to see the pitch and it really slowed everything down.”
Junior Bam Fenter delivered a go-ahead two-run double with two outs in the bottom of the sixth inning as the Vikings scored five runs in the inning and rallied past visiting Lake City 8-7 in Game 1 of the 6A District 1 championship best-of-3 series at Ted Page Field on Tuesday.
Game 2 is Thursday at 4 p.m. at Lake City High. With a win, Coeur d’Alene (16-2) will advance to host a state play-in series next week. If Lake City (11-8) wins, the teams will play a third game on Saturday at noon Coeur d’Alene High for the district championship.
Senior Kolbe Coey, who had two hits and two RBIs, pitched a scoreless seventh for Coeur d’Alene.
“Kolbe had a great day at the plate and he’s one of those guys where I know what he’s going to give me on the mound,” Williams said. “Anything I need, he goes out and does it. I never have to question it and he wants to be that closer. It’s huge having him in the back of the bullpen.”
Senior Owen Mangini, who has signed with Nevada, hit a three-run home run to give Lake City a 3-0 lead in the second inning. Senior Travis Usdrowski, who has signed with Centralia (Wash.) College, hit a two-run home run in the fifth for the Timberwolves.
Tanner Franklin pitched 5.1 innings, allowing three earned runs for Lake City, which committed four errors.
“Tanner threw well enough to win, but we ran ourselves off the bases with wild running mistakes,” Lake City coach Mike Criswell said. “You can’t win a district championship with mediocre defense. We have to lock it down on Thursday and keep the bats alive.”

SPIRIT LAKE — Junior Eric Wylie allowed two hits over five innings for the Tigers, who shut out the Badgers in Game 1 of the best-of-3 4A District 1 tournament at John Shaffer Field.
"Eric has been good all year long," Timberlake coach Bryce Johnson said. "He's not overpowering, but is location-based and invites a lot of contact, and we made some nice plays behind him."
Timberlake (13-3) hosts Bonners Ferry (6-12) in Game 2 of the series today. With a win, the Tigers advance to host a state play-in round series next week. If the Badgers win, the teams will play again on Thursday to determine the district champion.
Sophomore leadoff hitter Ryker Brennan had four hits and two RBIs, and Wylie had a two-run double in the first inning for Timberlake. Brennan's two-run double capped an eight-run fifth inning that ended the game on the 10-run rule.
"The top half of our lineup did a nice job," Johnson said. "We've done a good job limiting strikeouts, and making the other team make plays."
