PREP ROUNDUP: Schmit breaks 100-meter school record, Sandpoint track & field sweeps Lake City

MAX OSWALD | Hagadone News Network | UPDATED 7 months, 3 weeks AGO
by MAX OSWALD
I grew up in the small town of Orwigsburg, Pa., where I resided all of my life before moving to Sandpoint. I attended Blue Mountain High School, where I participated in cross country and track and field, a sport that I ended up falling in love with. I went on to attend and run for DeSales University (with other brief stints at Susquehanna University and Elizabethtown College) and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in sport communication with a minor in sport management. I remember just how great it made me feel when I was mentioned in my hometown newspaper. I want to be able to give that feeling to every athlete in Bonner County, no matter how big or small their accomplishments are. As an athlete myself, I know how many hours of work are put in on a daily basis, and that hard work deserves to be recognized. It is my goal to cover as much of the Bulldogs, Spartans and Wampus Cats as I can. I want to work with every athlete, parent, coach, administrator and the community to ensure the best stories are published. | April 30, 2025 1:00 AM

TRACK & FIELD

SANDPOINT — It was another record-setting day for the Sandpoint High track & field team — and for junior Isaac Schmit, his name will now appear three times on the record boards at the David R. Demers Track & Field Complex after his winning run in the 100-meter dash during a dual against Lake City on Monday.

Schmit sprinted to a time 10.79 seconds, beating out the old school record of 10.84 set by Caleb Bowman in 1998. As if that wasn't impressive enough, Schmit then ran to a new personal best time of 22.18 seconds in the 200-meter dash, winning with ease.

Schmit, Van Lee, Trey Blumenberg, and Maverick Gomez then combined to win the 4x100 relay in 43.77 seconds and the 4x200 relay in 1:32.02 as the Bulldogs' sprinters racked up a large number of points in the shorter distances, helping Sandpoint to a 79-point victory over the visiting Timberwolves.

Senior Will Mooney added two first-place finishes in both the 110-meter hurdles (16.90) and 300-meter hurdles (44.62), posting new personal bests in both events, sophomore Jack Lovin won the 1600-meter run (4:51.14) and sophomore Jaggar Lindgren won the 800-meter run (2:16.05) to round out the Bulldogs' individual wins on the track.

In the field events, sophomore Shooter Jones won the triple jump (42 feet, 4 inches) and the long jump (19 feet, 4.25 inches) and senior Van Lee vaulted his way to No. 4 all-time in school history by clearing 13 feet, 9 inches in the pole vault to capture gold. Junior Isaac Jordan rounded out the day with a new personal best throw of 39 feet, 5.5 inches in the shot put to win the event.

On the girls' side, junior Jetta Thaete won the discus (112 feet, 8 inches) and javelin (118 feet, 11 inches) and junior Elia Howard won the 100-meter dash with a new personal best (12.71) and 200-meter dash (26.80) to lead the Lady Bulldogs to a 71-point victory over the visitors, solidifying the sweep.

Sophomore Sawyer Lee hurdled her way to a pair of wins, taking first in the 100-meter hurdles (19.47) and the 300-meter hurdles (55.70). Sophomore Elizabeth Storms won the 800-meter run (2:30.05) and freshman Ruthie Laughridge won the 1600-meter run with a new personal best time of 5:46.56.

On the field, junior Izzy Davidson won the pole vault (10 feet even), senior Noah Roark won the high jump (4 feet, 10 inches) and junior Sierra Vest won the triple jump (29 feet, 11.25 inches) to round out Sandpoint's individual wins on the day.

In the relays, Vest, Ayla Hull, Vivian Haag and Leah Kerfoot were victorious in the 4x100 (54.13) and Howard, Laughridge, Lee and Madison Hall won the 4x400 (4:30.11) to end things for Sandpoint, which returns action Thursday at the District 1 Meet of Champions hosted by Post Falls High.

Bulldogs ousted from district tourney

Lewiston 5, Sandpoint 4

SANDPOINT — Sophomore Brennan Shaw and junior Mason Little each tallied a single and a double each as the host No. 2 Bulldogs were downed by the No. 3 Bengals in a 5A Inland Empire League District 1-2 loser-out game held Tuesday at War Memorial Field.

Sandpoint outhit Lewiston, nine to five, with five extra-base hits, but couldn't capitalize on some chances throughout the contest.

"Hats off to Lewiston, they pitched really well and didn't have a lot of walks or errors," Sandpoint High head coach Ricky Klontz said. "They played a clean, good game and got the best of us today."

Little knocked a two-run single to left in the bottom of the first to put the Bulldogs ahead 2-1. Lehman then scored Shaw on a groundout to shortstop in the third to tie the game 3-3. The visiting Bengals put up two runs in the fourth frame before junior Sage Medeiros, who pitched three one-hit innings in relief on the mound, hit a sacrifice fly to bring Sandpoint within one run, 5-4, but neither team would strike again over the final three innings.

Junior Dallen Williams, who tripled in the contest, got the start on the mound, giving up just one earned run while striking out one batter over four solid innings.

Klontz said the Bulldogs' pitching was good enough to score the win.

"Dallen and Sage both pitched really well and gave us a chance," coach Klontz said. "We just had a couple of defensive miscues that led to some runs that probably tipped the scales a little bit."

Senior Jesse Turner and junior Coleman Inge both added doubles in the loss.

Due to the new IHSAA postseason format, the loss does not necessarily mean Sandpoint, which sits at 12-13, is done for the season. In order to advance to the new 12-team Super Regional, the Bulldogs must be amongst the top 12 in the 5A MaxPreps rankings. As of Tuesday night, they sat in the No. 11 spot, but there are a handful of games around the state yet to be played.

In addition, the No.1 Moscow-No. 4 Lakeland game was postponed until today. Sandpoint would potentially face the loser of this game on Friday, as long as it would help the teams' potential rankings in order to qualify for state.

Sandpoint girls post clean sweep in win over Bengals

Sandpoint 9, Lewiston 3

LEWISTON — Sophomore Pepper Rickert won her 15th straight match of the season (6-0, 6-0), her 39th straight dating back to last season, and the visiting Bulldogs swept girls singles and doubles to defeat the Bengals in a 5A Inland Empire League matchup held Tuesday at Lewiston High.

Bella Bailey and Morgan Dail both won in the straight sets in the No. 2 and No. 3 girls singles spots, respectively, to complete the sweep in the category. It was Dail's first singles win of the season.

"Singles were untouchable," Sandpoint High head coach Kent Anderson said. "Pepper was flawless with her serves, groundies and volleys as she completely controlled the match. Bella returned to action after missing the Inland Empire Tournament with a strained hip. She appeared in top form, using her strong serve and consistent ground strokes to frustrate her opponent."

Doubles pairs Aubrey Knowles and Amelia Poulson also battled to a straight sets win while Lily Evans and Hannah Fisher, who placed seventh out of 57 pairs in No. 2 doubles at the Inland Empire Tournament last weekend, capped off the night with a straights sets win of their own.

"Amelia and Aubrey played smart tennis, using crafty volleys to dismantle their opponents after battling hard in the first set," coach Anderson said. "It was great to watch them gel and enjoy each other’s talents. Lily and Hannah refused to let their opponents make an extended run at them. They were grinders today, digging out everything hit at them. Really fun to watch."

For the boys, Fisher Dail and Caden Martz posted a tiebreaker win in the No. 2 boys doubles position while Jacob Dawson and Nathan Duke won in straight sets in No. 1 and No. 2 boys singles, respectively.

"Jacob overpowered his opponent with big ground strokes and even bigger overheads," coach Anderson noted. "Nathan was operating on all cylinders today, chasing down every ball and attacking the short balls. He’s ready to perform at districts next week. Fisher and Caden came back from losing their first set and dominated the rest of the way. Their patience & court smarts was unparalleled."

Colby Dyk and Morgan Harris picked up a win via a third-set tiebreaker in the No. 2 mixed doubles spot for Sandpoint (9-0-2), which will travel to Lakeland on Thursday for another 5A IEL matchup.

"Colby and Morgan Harris came back after losing their set first set and torched their opponents," coach Anderson said. "Colby played tough, using his speed to frustrate the opponents. Morgan, the 'Ice-Queen', was unflappable under pressure and refused to miss. It’s always a fun challenge when we play Lewiston and even better when we can pull out a victory."

Montecchi, Argabrite net hat tricks

Sandpoint 14, Spokane Stealth 14

SANDPOINT — Since the club's inception in 2021, the Lady Bulldogs have never defeated their WSLA East Division rival, the Stealth.

While that still remains true, on Monday at War Memorial in Sandpoint's regular season finale, sophomore Reina Montecchi scored three goals on three shots and dished out two assists, freshman Kat Argabrite found nylon three times as well for her third straight multi-goal effort and the host Lady Bulldogs settled for a tie with the undefeated squad from Spokane to close out the year.

"They don't have any freshman on their team whereas we have seven and four first-ever players," Sandpoint High head coach Nancy Dooley said. "This performance shows the growth that we've made this season."

Tess Sloan added two goals, Abby Baker scooped up a team-high four groundballs and registered a team-high two caused turnovers, and six different Lady Bulldogs scored once each for Sandpoint, which trailed 7-5 at intermission before outscoring Spokane 4-2 in the third frame to re-tie the game. With 58 seconds to go in regulation, the score tied at 14 all, the Stealth went on the attack after a faceoff win, but the Lady Bulldogs' defense stood strong.

"With their (Spokane's) experience and superior stick skills, they were able to win so many more draws than we did," coach Dooley said. "We only had about 20 percent of the draws and still scored so many goals."

Grace Gavin was able to win three draws and sophomore Medea Moon tallied six saves in between the posts for Sandpoint, which finished the season 4-4-1.

"These girls really supported each other and improved in every game — both in skills and in operating as a team," coach Dooley said. "It's a testament to their good attitudes... they're such good sports and are just a wonderful team to coach. I'm really pleased with how our team was able to gel together this season."
