Duane Olson, affectionately known as “The Duke,” passed away unexpectedly at his home in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, on April 19, 2025. He was born to Hilda and Raymond Olson on July 13, 1936, in Comertown, Mont.

Duane married the love of his life, Marlene, on Aug. 2, 1959, in Miles City, Mont. After a brief time living in Montana, the couple moved to Seattle, Wash., where they remained until their retirement in 2004. They then relocated to Coeur d’Alene to enjoy their golden years.

Duane and Marlene shared 58 wonderful years together, raising two children and delighting in the lives of their five grandchildren. He was also fortunate to spend time with his four great-grandchildren, a blessing he never took for granted and enjoyed so much.

Duane served six years in the U.S. Army Reserve and held a variety of jobs before settling into his lifelong career in the printing industry. When asked about his favorite job, he would often say “working road construction,” likely because it gave him an excuse to “play” with the big machinery.

Together, Duane and Marlene traveled extensively, enjoying numerous trips to Mexico, a couple to Hawaii and a memorable journey across the country in their motorhome. After retiring, they spent several winters in Arizona, soaking up the sun and making lasting memories.

He cherished his annual golf trips with his nephew, Kim, and the “Sleepless Knights” crew. He was thrilled to share a few of those trips with his son, Scott; son-in-law Bob; and grandsons Eric and Austin. Above all else, Duane treasured the time spent with his family and friends, no matter where life took them.

Duane had a presence that could light up any room. His infectious smile, laughter and warm heart made him beloved by all who knew him. He lived life with joy, always ready for a good time. He loved dancing, especially with Marlene, who taught him how to dance when they first met, golfing, billiards and anything outdoors, whether boating on Lake Coeur d’Alene, fishing, or watching sports. He enjoyed working in his yard, with spring being his favorite time of year. He also had a love for cards and poker was his game of choice.

Duane is survived by his son, Scott Olson, and daughter-in-law Carol; daughter Shelli Quant and son-in-law Bob; grandchildren: Kendra (Gary), Rebecca, Kyle (Nikki), Eric and Austin (Camila); great-grandchildren: Isabella, Kasen and Avery; and his faithful dog, Marli. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Marlene, and great-granddaughter Iyanna.

He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.

A celebration of Duane and Marlene’s lives will be held at a later date in Lynnwood, Wash.  Please visit Duane’s online memorial and sign his guestbook at www.yatesfuneralhomes.com.
