Gary L. Nelson, 71

Gary L. Nelson, 71, passed away at home July 28, 2025. He was born June 19, 1954, in Sioux Falls, S.D., to Harold and Betty (McRoden) Nelson. Gary was a graduate of The South Dakota School of Mines and Technology, Class of '77. He spent 46 years in the mining industry as a metallurgical engineer.

In 1976, Gary married Carol Farmer, and they celebrated 49 years together. They enjoyed traveling together, visiting many places in the U.S. and internationally to Scotland, Chile and the Philippines.

Gary was an avid golfer and a board member at The Coeur d’Alene Public Golf Club.

He is survived by his wife, Carol Nelson; and three children: Blake Nelson, (Spokane, Wash.); Larissa Nelson (Manila, the Philippines); Valerie Nelson and son-in-law, Daniel McMonagle (Glasgow, Scotland); his brother, Brent Nelson (Rapid City, S.D.); sister Sherilyn (Scott) Carmody, (Sioux Falls, S.D.) and many nieces and nephews.

There will be a celebration of Gary’s life at 3 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 2, 2025, at Yates Funeral Home — Hayden Chapel, 373 E. Hayden Ave., Hayden, ID 83835. You are invited to wear a golf shirt or similar attire. Please join us for a reception following the service.
