SEATTLE — The Mariners split wins with the Texas Rangers in Friday and Saturday play as they faced the Lone Star State team on the Mariners’ home diamond. The Mariners grabbed a 4-3 win Friday after dropping the Rangers 6-0 Thursday, but lost a bit of momentum Saturday in a hard-fought 11 innings that led to a 6-4 loss for the Washington team.
Friday at T-Mobile Park, the Mariners were able to pull in the win after shortstop J.P. Crawford broke out of a hitting slump, crushing a homer out of a 95 mph fastball thrown by the Rangers’ Robert Garcia.
“Just don’t miss the fastball,” Crawford said after the game. “I put a good swing on it, trying to get the guy over, and thankfully I didn’t miss.”
It was the first walk-off win of Crawford’s career and was the seventh walk-off win of the season for the Mariners.
The win put the Mariners two games ahead of the Rangers for the final spot in the AL Wild Card standings, though Saturday dropped that down to one game.
In Saturday play, Wyatt Langford hit a tiebreaking single in the 11th inning, and the Texas Rangers beat the Seattle Mariners 6-4 on Saturday.
Batting with runners on the corners and nobody out, Langford sliced a fastball from Casey Legumina (4-6) into right field. Ezequiel Duran followed with a broken-bat single, driving in Sam Haggerty for a 6-4 lead.
Luis Curvelo (1-0) earned his first win in his second career game. He retired each of his four batters.
Texas grabbed a 4-2 lead with two runs in the 10th. Kyle Higashioka singled home Duran, and Marcus Semien had a run-scoring groundout.
Higashioka also hit a two-run homer off Luis Castillo in the third.
The Mariners tied it in the bottom of the 10th on Randy Arozarena's two-run drive off Robert Garcia. It was Arozarena’s 14th homer since June 30, tops in the majors during that span, and No. 22 on the year.
The Mariners failed to score after loading the bases with one out in the seventh. Arozarena and Cal Raleigh struck out looking against Danny Coulombe.
Raleigh went 0 for 5 with five strikeouts.
Sunday's final game in the series was not completed by press time and results will be published online at columbiabasinherald.com when they become available and will appear in Tuesday's edition of the paper.
