Advanced Placement physics, calculus, government or English composition and literature can be daunting, especially when one is tested on his or her knowledge of each.

Nine Coeur d'Alene Charter Academy students overcame those challenges and earned top scores — fives — on multiple AP tests when they were tasked with demonstrating their understanding of the subjects over two weeks of testing in April.

Results were just returned in early July.

"I was excited about them," Class of 2025 Coeur d'Alene Charter Academy graduate George Lavy said Wednesday. "I was primarily taking AP classes for exposure to ideas and preparing for college."

Lavy earned fives on the AP literature, computer science principles and government exams. He scored fours on the other two tests he took.

"It was more so being prepared for higher-level college classes," Lavy said. "I was very happy with the amount of information I was able to learn. All the teachers were great. I took a lot away from this year, which was really good.”

Lavy is bound for the University of Michigan to study neuroscience. He attended Charter from sixth to 12th grades; this earned Lavy and his peers who did the same the title of "lifers" and badges for their longevity with the school.

“Charter has prepared me amazingly for college," he said. "I couldn't have been happier about the time, dedication and hard work everybody at that school puts in. There's so much that goes on behind the scenes there. It's the No. 1 school in Idaho for a reason."

His classmate and fellow Charter "lifer" Aliyah Stewart also fared well on the AP exams. She scored fives on the English literature and government tests and earned a three on the Spanish exam.

Stewart, who also was relieved to pass AP exams as a junior, said she was proud of how her scores improved this year.

"I had a better idea of what to expect on the tests," she said. "My Spanish test was especially difficult, but I received a passing score of three, which I was happy with, so now I can use it to work toward a minor in Spanish."

Stewart said she believes her test results reflect the standards of excellence for which Charter is known.

"I am certainly not saying that my scores were perfect, but it’s the striving for excellence and emphasis of a strong work ethic that Charter teaches, which helps its students to succeed," she said.

She said she is grateful for her teachers and her school.

"Now I know that I can face any academic challenge that college can throw at me," she said. "Charter’s regular classes are honestly just as hard as AP courses, so for Charter students I highly recommend taking them. I’m so excited that AP classes will allow me to skip past so many basic college courses so I can save time and money, only quickening the journey to my goals."

Ninety students — mostly seniors and some juniors — took at least one AP exam for a total of 157 tests taken. Of those, 144 tests were passed with a three or better, and 91.7% of tests taken were passed. The number of students who scored at least one five was 27, or 30%. Eighty-six students, or 95%, passed at least one test.

Just nine students, or 10%, had multiple scores of five, including Lavy and Stewart.

Charter's other 2025 AP exam top test takers:
• Ashlyn Craigie
• Skyler Gessner
• Lydia Lehosit
• Evelyn Sutton
• Reagan Meine
• Lily Wessels
• Jackson Burbank Litalien

Mike Baker installed his exhibit at the Art Spirit Gallery hoping it would generate conversations in the community. And wow, did it ever. "No Permission Needed," featuring pieces created using artificial intelligence, debuted Nov. 14 at the downtown gallery. It quickly became a subject of social media discussion and scrutiny in the arts community and the community at large for the use of AI and female experiences being brought into focus by a male, with some accusing Baker of misogyny, art theft or posing as an artist while others defended the intention behind the project and the exploration of a new technology-based medium. "At the end of the day it’s focused on women’s health, all rooted in the work we’ve done around endometriosis and tied to the experiences people have shared with me and that I’ve seen walking through the health care system,” Baker said Thursday. “I was just trying to capture all of that within it."
