I grew up in the small town of Orwigsburg, Pa., where I resided all of my life before moving to Sandpoint. I attended Blue Mountain High School, where I participated in cross country and track and field, a sport that I ended up falling in love with. I went on to attend and run for DeSales University (with other brief stints at Susquehanna University and Elizabethtown College) and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in sport communication with a minor in sport management. I remember just how great it made me feel when I was mentioned in my hometown newspaper. I want to be able to give that feeling to every athlete in Bonner County, no matter how big or small their accomplishments are. As an athlete myself, I know how many hours of work are put in on a daily basis, and that hard work deserves to be recognized. It is my goal to cover as much of the Bulldogs, Spartans and Wampus Cats as I can. I want to work with every athlete, parent, coach, administrator and the community to ensure the best stories are published. | August 6, 2025 1:00 AM

SANDPOINT — Gavin Knutson, two-time Big Sky Region bull riding champion at Montana Western University in Dillon, Mont., took home the biggest payoff from the Sandpoint Rodeo, held Friday and Saturday at Bonner County Fairgrounds' Mike Flanigan Arena.

Knutson, a native of Polson, Mont., who was selected 23rd overall by the Nashville Stampede in the 2024 PBR New Rider Draft, scored 87 points atop C5 Rodeo's Kung Pao to capture gold and a $8,602 payoff in the bull riding competition — the 21-year-old's best ride of the 2025 season.

Bodee Lammers, 28, a former football player at Sul Ross State University in Alpine, Texas, won the bareback riding competition. The Tolar, Texas native scored 82 points on C5 Rodeo's Young Flatts and earned $2,343 for his efforts.

Jacob Stacy, 38, of Moses Lake, Wash. won $1,615 for his first-place finish in steer wrestling. His time of 5.1 seconds was his third-fastest mark in the year of 2025.

Tyrel Roberts, 24, a former member of the Oklahoma Panhandle State University rodeo team in Goodwell, Okla., captured first in saddle bronc riding. The Charlie Lake, British Columbia resident scored 86 points on C5 Rodeo's North Country, earning $2,851 for what was his best ride of the 2025 season.

Dakota Felton, 28, of Mountain Home, Texas, put together a blistering fast time of 8.5 seconds to win the tie-down roping competition. It was the former Ranger College (Ranger, Texas) rodeo team member's tied-for-best time of the 2024-2025 campaign.

Teri Bangert of Olympia, Wash. took home gold in a close barrel racing competition that saw top 11 competitors all within .39 seconds of one another. Bangert, who placed third at the Newport Rodeo (15.17 seconds) in late June, put up a mark of 17.39 seconds for a payoff of $1,542. Sandpoint's very own Amber Villelli tied for 10th with a time of 17.78 seconds.

Taking home all-around cowboy honors and a $1,717 payoff was Shane Erickson, 45, of Winnemucca, Nevada. Erickson won the team roping competition in 6.2 seconds with partner Andy Carlson, 39, of Hermiston, Ore.

The Sandpoint Rodeo, which joined the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association in 2015, is part of the Columbia River Circuit. The top 12 earners in each event throughout the circuit will have a chance to compete at the Northwest Ford Columbia River Circuit Finals Rodeo, set to be held Oct. 16 through 18 in Redmond, Oregon.
