COLLEGE NOTEBOOK: Yarnell set to be key piece at Northwest University this fall

MAX OSWALD | Hagadone News Network | UPDATED 1 year AGO
by MAX OSWALD
I grew up in the small town of Orwigsburg, Pa., where I resided all of my life before moving to Sandpoint. I attended Blue Mountain High School, where I participated in cross country and track and field, a sport that I ended up falling in love with. I went on to attend and run for DeSales University (with other brief stints at Susquehanna University and Elizabethtown College) and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in sport communication with a minor in sport management. I remember just how great it made me feel when I was mentioned in my hometown newspaper. I want to be able to give that feeling to every athlete in Bonner County, no matter how big or small their accomplishments are. As an athlete myself, I know how many hours of work are put in on a daily basis, and that hard work deserves to be recognized. It is my goal to cover as much of the Bulldogs, Spartans and Wampus Cats as I can. I want to work with every athlete, parent, coach, administrator and the community to ensure the best stories are published. | August 7, 2025 1:00 AM

Kimberly Yarnell, Northwest University Soccer

A 2023 graduate of Sandpoint High, Kimberly, a former Inland Empire All-League selection as a senior and the Newcomer of the Year as a sophomore for the Lady Bulldogs, was mentioned in an article about the Eagles' upcoming season.

"Kimberly is going to be a strong addition to our program, and we are excited to see what she can help us with in our midfield," head coach April VanAssche said in an interview with the Northwest University Sports Information Department. "She is tough, gritty, and quick, and we are excited to see her play as an Eagle this season and help us accomplish our goals."

A rising junior, Kimberly was an ALL-NWAC First Team selection as a sophomore at Spokane Community College. Across two years as a Sasquatch, she started in 30 of the team's 32 games, compiling two assists and eight shots on goal.

Jacob Ballard, BYU Swimming & Diving

A 2020 graduate of Central Valley High (Spokane Valley) who swam for a handful of years for Sandpoint High and the Sandpoint Sharks, Jacob is set to compete at the TYR Summer Championships, which started Tuesday and concludes Friday at William Woollett Jr. Aquatics Center in Irvine, Calif. The former 4A (now 5A) Idaho state champion in the 100 fly is set to compete in the 200-meter-long course fly on Friday, with the preliminary round starting at 9 a.m. and the finals at 5 p.m. The event predates the collegiate season and serves as a high-level competition for elite swimmers from across the nation. Swimmers in the 200 fly range from 16 to 27 years old, with some hailing from schools like the University of Virginia, the University of Louisville, Ohio State University, Arizona State University, Indiana University, Northwestern University, and more. All sessions will stream live on the USA Swimming Network app. Live results will be posted to Meet Mobile.

Cody Newhart, Lackawanna College Baseball

A 2023 graduate of Sandpoint High, Cody recently received National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) All-Academic Second Team honors for his efforts in the classroom. To achieve this honor, a student-athlete must maintain a 3.80-3.99 grade point average throughout the entire school year. The baseball team itself was recognized as an NJCAA Academic Team of the Year, posting a 3.31 cumulative GPA.
