Coeur d'Alene Summer Theatre's production of "She Loves Me" opens at 7:30 tonight on the Schuler Performing Arts Center stage on the North Idaho College campus, 880 W. Garden Ave., Coeur d'Alene.
A charming musical inspired by the same play as the iconic film "You've Got Mail" starring Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan, "She Loves Me" is a story of mistaken identities and love letters that follows two feuding perfume clerks who don’t realize they’re falling for each other. Set in a 1930s European perfumery, "She Loves Me" centers on shop clerks Amalia and Georg, who butt heads by day but unknowingly exchange heartfelt letters through a "lonely hearts advertisement." Their journey to uncover their secret admirers is filled with twists and charm. Rated G for all audiences with music by Jerry Bock and Sheldon Harnick ("Fiddler on the Roof") and a book by Joe Masteroff ("Cabaret").
Based on Miklós László’s play "Parfumerie" — also the source for "You've Got Mail" — "She Loves Me" earned five Tony Award nominations in 1964. It is widely regarded as one of the most charming musicals ever written as it blends old-world elegance with heartfelt humor.
"She Loves Me" is directed and choreographed by Gary John LaRosa with musical direction by Scott Michaelsen and stars Chloe Sundet as Amalia Balash and Jesse Hampsch as Georg Nowack, joined by Amy D’Orazi (Ilona Ritter), Anders Karl Haglund (Arpad Laszlo), Michael K. Hynes (Mr. Maraczek), Sam Stickels (Steven Kodaly), Daniel J. Bell (Ladislav Sipos) and featured violinist Richard Altenbach. The ensemble includes Alyssa Day, Adele Trapp, Becky Brilliant, Sydney Glover, Tamara Schupman, Anden J. Leo, Sergio Dijiani, Nick Zimny and Michael Hamill (dance captain).
