The idea behind Persevering Marksmen, a new shooting club, is simple: “we will find a way.”

Founded by Bill Thurston, Persevering Marksmen offers access to firearm safety classes and training, shooting sports opportunities and more to people with physical disabilities.

There is no fee to be a member of the club, and some equipment use is also free.

“With the organizations I am building relationships with, we have solutions available to assist any person to overcome any physical malady,” Thurston said.

Thurston is working with the Fernan Rod and Gun Club, which has classrooms, range options and has long prioritized access for those with disabilities. Other sites include Rock Lake Rifle Range in eastern Washington, the Farragut Public Shooting Range and local private ranges.

Group activities are planned according to the goals and needs of members.

“It just takes the desire by the Marksmen,” Thurston said.

Persevering Marksmen meets bimonthly. The goal of the club is also to connect members to events and opportunities — and to one another — in addition to resources from the National Rifle Association, Idaho Fish and Game, local gun clubs and other services for people with disabilities.

Range safety officers will be present at shooting events and club members will have opportunities to train as RSOs themselves.

“Firearm safety is paramount,” Thurston said.
