Community members are invited to take a shot at some nice prizes and support local veterans at the same time.

Special Forces Association Chapter 43 North Idaho will host the third annual Dustin Ard Commemorative Steel Competition from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Aug. 24 at the Fernan Rod and Gun Club, 11600 Fernan Lake Road. 

The competition is a tribute to Sgt. 1st Class Dustin Ard, a Green Beret from eastern Idaho who died from wounds sustained during combat operations in Zabul Province, Afghanistan, in 2019. He left behind his wife, Mary, and their 3-year-old daughter. The couple’s son was born after Ard’s death.

“Several of the men in our chapter knew Dustin and served with him,” said Brenda Day, communications director for the North Idaho chapter. “(The competition) is about honoring Dustin, remembering him and bringing folks together in North Idaho.”

The steel shooting competition aims to foster community and camaraderie while preserving Ard’s legacy of service and sacrifice. Proceeds will support local veterans and a portion will go to assist the Ard family.

“It’s our one and only annual fundraiser,” Day said.

Participants must be 18 or older. Registration costs $100.
