First day of the Moses Lake Demo Derby

MOSES LAKE — The first night of Miner Services’ Demolition Derby kicked off Tuesday with a variety of racing and knockout events, concluding with a last man standing demo derby with Seth Dompier coming out on top.
“It’s just a great time,” said Dompier. “It’s a lot of fun coming out here with your friends and a lot of good people (and being) in front of the fans and just having a great time wrecking some cars.”
He said his strategy going into the match was to keep his car moving and last long enough to win. Dompier was able to secure multiple knockouts during the event and was able to take the victory after the other remaining car, driven by Michael Koon, flipped Dompier’s car, ending the derby with a red flag.
Dompier has been participating in the Demo Derby for over 20 years and says he has always loved working with vehicles. His favorite part of doing the demo derby every year is just getting time to have fun with his friends, building and then destroying each other’s cars.
“For anyone that’s never done it, I encourage you to do it,” he said. “This class is really easy to get into, and it’s a great time.”
The night kicked off with dirt bike events, having both a barrel race and a traditional five-lap race to finish. Jimmy Lamastus from Post Falls, Idaho, took first in the barrel race with a time of 17.4 and Dan Stanley from Moses Lake took first in the five-lap race.
Lamastus was unfortunately injured during the five-lap race and had to be taken off the scene by the Grant County Fire District 5 medical staff on site. The Demo Derby organizer, Aaron Schrodt said that the biker had broken his leg with no further updates.
“Obviously, you never want someone to get injured and see everybody get home safe,” said Schrodt.
Overall, Schrodt said that he felt the first night of the demo derby didn’t exactly go as he had hoped for night one, but is looking forward to coming back out for night two and making improvements to the derby. He also gave his thanks to Jeff Cobb for stepping in and organizing the dirt bike event this year which resulted in the bikers receiving more time to ride.
“As long as people like the show, I guess that’s what really matters,” he said.
Night two of the Demo Derby will feature a charity race with lawnmowers, which was initially pitched by Nick Haight and Alex Alvarado, but was turned into a charity event through Brandon Douglas from Windermere Real Estate, said Schrodt.
“A big thing for the rodeo association is to give back to the community, and that’s what we’re trying to push towards,” he said. “We figured that would be the best way to start is having a charity race and have each committee member pick a charity that they want to raise money for.”
Schrodt said he appreciated all the volunteers and the long hours they put in for the demo derby and the work they do following the derby to get the arena ready for the rodeo.
“Just big thanks to everyone that comes out and puts their hours in,” said Schrodt. “Definitely would not have a performance like we do without everyone.”

BBCC eyes budget and spring enrollment
MOSES LAKE — During Big Bend Community College’s April 30 board meeting the college President, Sarah Thompson Tweedy, shared the counts for spring enrollment and Full Time Enrollment numbers for Spring of 2026 along with updates on where the budget sits. “We still have some work to do in terms of systematically going through our expenses and seeing how much of the requests that we have before us, how many of those we can put off,” said Thompson Tweedy. “There’s the opportunity to close that gap by reducing our expenses, but the challenge is, we’ve also had some expenses go up.” As of April 15, 2026 the spring quarter head count was up nearly 18% from 2025, but total FTE’s and state-funded FTEs were down 6.9% and 11.6% respectively, according to the board agenda.

Othello moves on to second round of districts
OTHELLO — The Othello Huskies (11-5) extended their postseason push after earning a close 2-1 victory in overtime against the Ephrata Tigers (7-10) in the first round of the 2A district tournament. The game winning goal came in second overtime when Othello sophomore Samuel Marroquin knocked the ball into the back of the net. “It was a tough game, Ephrata is definitely a tough opponent, but I feel like we had prepared well for the week,” said Marroquin. “We definitely had a good game plan and we just gave everything. We knew if this was our last game we were going to go out with a bang.” The game was a tight battle from the very beginning as the Tigers and Huskies battled under the hot sun. Othello scored in the first half and maintained their lead in throughout, going into halftime 1-0.
