The Wachholz College Center’s Made in Montana Film Series continues Aug. 27 with “Thousand Pieces of Gold,” featuring a live interview with the director.
Filmed in southwest Montana, “Thousand Pieces of Gold” a 1991 film by Nancy Kelly, is based on the life of Chinese-American pioneer Polly Bemis, which Montana Film Series’ co-creator Clayton McDougall describes as an “overlooked indie Western.”
The film earned critical acclaim, with Kelly’s direction drawing comparisons to classic Western auteurs like John Ford. Despite the film’s success, she encountered significant industry barriers that limited opportunities for female directors at the time.
The film starts at 7 p.m. Afterward, McDougall and Made in Montana Film Series’ co-creator and Wachholz College Center Technical Director Dwight Camillucci will hold a virtual interview with Kelly, who spent six years fundraising before making her feature directorial debut with “Thousand Pieces of Gold.”
Tickets are $10 and $8 for senior citizens and may be purchased at wccmt.org or by calling the ticket office at 756-1400.
