Organizers announce schedule for Libby Dam 50th Commemoration

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has set the agenda for Saturday’s Libby Dam 50th Commemoration Memorial unveiling and open house. 

The events will take place at the visitor center and the top of the dam. RSVP are not needed. 

Guests and the public should arrive between 9 and 9:30 a.m. 

The formal ceremony begins at 10 a.m. at the Visitor Center Flag Plaza. Following the presentation of colors, the National Anthem will be played by community band Big Sky Bows and Blowhards.

Here is the rest of the schedule:

- Welcome by Master of Ceremonies, Rick Spiger, Libby Dam Operating Project Manager

- Remarks by Seattle District Commander Col. Kathryn Sanborn

- Memorial Unveiling with Col. Sanborn

- Reading of Memorial Names by Montana Historian Rich Aarstad

- Taps

- Musical Tribute: America the Beautiful & Stars and Stripes Forever

At 10:30 a.m., there will be a media and photo opportunity and the open house begins.

From 10:30 to 1 p.m., visitors will be able to explore Libby Dam and Visitor Center, including access to the top of the dam. There will be an exhibition of memorabilia and photos from the construction era.

Complimentary cake and cookies will be served and food trucks will be available.

The Visitor Center bookstore gift shop will be open and there will be an art exhibit in the lower level of the visitor center.

At 11 a.m., there will be a Waters of Wealth book signing with author Don Spritzer and Operation BOLD: Libby Dam at Fifty book signing with author Rich (Ray) Aarstad.

From 1 p.m. to  2 p.m., there will be a historical talk about the Libby Dam construction era with Jeff Gruber and Rich Aarstad in the Visitor Center.

At 2 p.m. there will be a raffle drawing for prizes (must complete booth bingo card and be present to win).

Those attending are asked to carpool due to limited parking and entry is only at the Libby Dam Visitor Center gate.

Good to know

Dogs not allowed on top of the dam or in Visitor Center; must be leashed and controlled;

No weapons allowed, including concealed carry; 

Visitor Center closes at 6 p.m.;

Souse Gulch Day Use Area is open until 9 p.m.
