Lora Jean MacKenzie Lachelt, 91, passed away on Aug. 6, 2025, in her daughter's arms, with her faithful companion, Skye by her side. She lived a life full of adventure, service, and love.
Born March 11, 1934, in Havre, Lora Jean was the daughter of Genevieve Coolen MacKenzie and Joseph MacKenzie.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her sister, Mary Joan Erickson; her husband, DeWayne Alden Lachelt; her grandson, Luke Floren; and her premature twin daughters, Stacy and Stephanie.
She is survived by her children, Mike (Ginger) Lachelt of Wasilla, Alaska; Mary Kay MacKenzie of Key Largo, Florida; and Gwen Lachelt of Aztec, New Mexico. She also leaves behind grandchildren, Michael Floren, Mike Lachelt, Jessie (Renee) Lachelt, Benjamin Lachelt, and Caleb Lachelt; nieces and nephews, Patti Erickson Harris, Lia Erickson Keller, and David Erickson; as well as numerous relatives and dear friends.
Lora Jean lived in Alaska, Maryland, and Colorado before returning to her beloved Montana in 1988. She settled in Whitefish, where she worked for various local businesses, including many years at her cousin’s Haines Drugstore. She was a dedicated volunteer with Soroptimist International of Whitefish, serving on the board and helping operate the Thrift Haus to raise funds supporting women and girls in achieving economic empowerment in Flathead County.
In 2008, at the age of 74, Lora Jean discovered a new calling—volunteering for her first presidential campaign. A week after the election, she said it was the most important thing she had ever done.
Alzheimer’s disease started taking her from us many years ago, and now, the grieving process can finally begin. A celebration of her life will be held in Whitefish at a later date.
Lora Jean’s family extends heartfelt thanks to the staff of Cottonwood Healthcare Center and Hospice of Mercy in Durango, Colorado, for their years of care and support.
