Pend Oreille Arts Council’s Kaleidoscope program is in need of volunteer instructors for the upcoming school year. Let me remind you that Kaleidoscope is hands-on art classes offered to all elementary schools in Bonner County for children in grades three to six.

All we need from you is the ability to offer up 60 to 90 minutes a month for eight months starting in October. We provide you with lesson plans and all materials. Teachers will arrange the schedule with you so there’s quite a bit of flexibility on days and times. Because we will thoroughly train you, there is no need for you to be an artist.

I will tell you that you must like working with children, otherwise we’ll do the rest. You can team up with a friend if you like, and you’ll feel secure because the teachers are always in the classroom with you.

“Training dates are Saturday, Sept. 20 and Sunday, Sept. 21,” Volunteer coordinator Molly Gentry said. “Volunteers will attend one class, either morning or afternoon. I will contact them before the training dates.”

If you’re interested in learning more about Kaleidoscope, go to POAC’s website www.artinsandpoit.org/education. So you know, the program has served over 20,000 students in the thirty years we’ve been offering these classes. It’s a tremendously worthwhile opportunity for students to learn how to express themselves through art and for you to hone your instructional skills.

To sign up, contact POAC at [email protected] or go to the POAC Gallery and Office at 313 N. Second Ave., in downtown Sandpoint. Call 208-263-6139.

Pend Oreille Arts Council is a not-for-profit organization that, besides offering art classes to elementary school students, also has a program called Expressions for teen students while the Joyce Dillon Studio provides art classes for adults. Look for the announcement about this year’s Performing Arts Series and its accompanying Ovations program in which performers hold instructional lessons and workshops for local schoolchildren.
