PREP FOOTBALL: Lakeland shuts out Bonners Ferry in opener
Coeur d'Alene Press | UPDATED 11 months, 4 weeks AGO
RATHDRUM — Senior Peyton Hillman threw three first-half touchdown passes, two to senior Jace Taylor, and the Lakeland Hawks went on to beat the Bonners Ferry Badgers 41-0 in the season opener for both teams Saturday night at Corbit Field.
Hillman connected with a wide-open senior Cash Lund down the middle on a 44-yard scoring pass to open the scoring with 8:30 left in the first quarter.
“We got better as the game went on,” Lakeland coach Mike Schroeder said. “In the first quarter, I didn’t think we played all that well. Bonners had some guys up front that gave us some difficulty. There’s definitely some things we can improve on. But I was happy with the team’s effort. We’ve got the right attitude right now.”
Taylor caught a 5-yard TD pass from Hillman with 6:35 left in the second quarter to make it 14-0.
Taylor then made a diving, one-handed catch in the corner of the end zone for a 16-yard score with 1:19 left to make it 21-0 Hawks at the half.
Junior Griffin Tamagni scored on runs of 25 and 2 yards, and senior Dre Smith scored from 1 yard out to cap the scoring for Lakeland.
On Friday, Bonners Ferry travels to Priest River, and Lakeland is home vs. Lake City.

ANACONDA, Mont. — The Tigers were moving the ball offensively and playing well defensively in the first 12 minutes of the game.
But after a Timberlake turnover and a blocked punt at the start of the second quarter, the Diggers of Sugar City show why they’re the three-time defending state champions.
Sugar-Salem, winners of six state titles in the last seven years, scored 28 points in the second quarter en route to a win over the Tigers in the opener for both at Anaconda High’s Mitchell Stadium.
“They’ve won a lot of state titles for a reason,” Timberlake coach Kelly Amos said. “They played really good, fundamental football. We competed really well, but we’ll have to figure some things out. Sugar-Salem doesn’t make a lot of mistakes and when you screw up, they make you pay. We were fine and moving the ball, but just didn’t score. They were just really good at not making mistakes, and when you do against them, it makes it so much worse.”
Westin Herbert scored on a 1-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter for Timberlake, which travels to Grangeville on Friday.
