PREP GIRLS SOCCER: Sandpoint drops two contests to open season

by MAX OSWALD
I grew up in the small town of Orwigsburg, Pa., where I resided all of my life before moving to Sandpoint. I attended Blue Mountain High School, where I participated in cross country and track and field, a sport that I ended up falling in love with. I went on to attend and run for DeSales University (with other brief stints at Susquehanna University and Elizabethtown College) and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in sport communication with a minor in sport management. I remember just how great it made me feel when I was mentioned in my hometown newspaper. I want to be able to give that feeling to every athlete in Bonner County, no matter how big or small their accomplishments are. As an athlete myself, I know how many hours of work are put in on a daily basis, and that hard work deserves to be recognized. It is my goal to cover as much of the Bulldogs, Spartans and Wampus Cats as I can. I want to work with every athlete, parent, coach, administrator and the community to ensure the best stories are published. | August 24, 2025 8:30 PM

Coeur d'Alene 3, Sandpoint 0

SANDPOINT — Junior Izzy Stark racked up 17 saves during her first varsity start in net as the host Lady Bulldogs fell to the Lady Vikings in their season-opening 6A/5A Inland Empire League matchup Friday at War Memorial Field.

Coeur d'Alene outshot Sandpoint 20 to 3 and tallied up 15 corners on the evening.

With no time to dwell, the Lady Bulldogs headed to Coeur d'Alene for another 6A/5A IEL matchup with Lake City on Saturday afternoon.

Full box score not available.

Lake City 6, Sandpoint 1

COEUR d'ALENE — Senior Cecilia Dignan scored on a penalty kick during the 72nd minute as the Lady Bulldogs fell to the Lady Timberwolves by a 5-goal margin Saturday afternoon in their second 6A/5A Inland Empire League matchup in as many days.

Sandpoint found themselves having to defend for the majority of the match's 80 minutes, similar to their opener against Coeur d'Alene.

"We were unable to keep possession in the midfield or up top," Sandpoint High head coach Alan Brinkmeier said. "This is something that we will really focus on this week. Coeur d'Alene and Lake City are dangerous in the air off free kicks and corners... Perhaps this will be good, won't allow the team time to overanalyze, fix the little things and move into the next game. I still hold high hopes for this team and these two games will not define our season. They are two very difficult and well-coached programs that will require more preparation before we see them again later on in the season."

Junior Izzy Stark recorded another six saves in goal for Sandpoint (0-2), which hosts Post Falls Monday.

First half — 1, LC, Ava Roberts (Riley Brazle), 20'. 2, LC, Finley Wright (Lila Murrow), 26'. Second half — 3, LC, Nell Hutchins (Brazle), 41'. 4, LC, Hutchins (Brazle), 51'. 5, LC, Brazle (penalty kick), 71'. 7, SPT, Cecilia Dignan (penalty kick), 72'. 7, LC, Murrow (Katie Kovach), 79'.

Shots on goal — Lake City 12. Sandpoint 5.

Saves — LC, Savvy Spencer 4; SPT, Izzy Stark 6.
