WEIPPE – Sophomore quarterback Cooper Miller passed for 208 yards while rushing for 140 as the Wallace Miners ran away with their season opener against Timberline.
Despite the lopsided final score, the game began as a back-and-forth affair, with Wallace leading 24-14 after the first frame. But the Miners would outscore the Spartans 44-12 the rest of the way.
Head coach Jared Young was pleased with his team, going on a long season-opening road trip and coming out of it with a dominant win.
“Thought Coach (Corey) Miller called a great, balanced game on offense, defense played hard and really put the pressure on all night,” Young said. “We are coming along. The young men deserve to celebrate their hard work and effort, but as always, we have to clean things up and keep improving.”
Senior Gus Scott caught four passes for scores but was one of five Miners to find the end zone.
Young has been vocal in the offseason about the Miners’ need to play better on the defensive side of the ball, and his defense showed up in a big way in the opener.
Sophomore Charlie Stone led the charge, with a second-half scoop and score, followed immediately by an interception that turned into points for Wallace.
“We forced five turnovers and hung on to the ball all night,” Young said, “let’s hope we can keep those numbers going.”
Wallace (1-0) hosts Soap Lake (Wash.) on Sept. 5 at Sather Field.
KELLOGG VOLLEYBALL
- 8/23
RIRIE – The Kellogg Volleyball Team had a good showing at the annual Bulldog Bash at Ririe High School.
According to head coach Hollie Yrjana, the Bulldog Bash is a special round-robin style event where teams play one another in two-matches. Kellogg won 10 of the 12 sets they played, dropping single sets to Rockland and Aberdeen respectively.
“We had a great day in Ririe,” Yrjana said. “Our girls were really clicking and it was a lot of fun to watch.”
The Wildcats knocked off the host team from Ririe, a state tournament team from a year ago.
“We played some great volleyball against Ririe, who is a lot bigger than us,” Yrjana said. “Our quick improvements and success has us really excited for the season.”
Kellogg is on the road this week, traveling to Timberlake on Tuesday, to Wallace on Thursday, and to Orofino on Saturday.
