PREP SOCCER: Wickens boots Vikings over Hawks

COEUR d’ALENE — A bounce and a boot later, junior Ava Wickens gave Coeur d’Alene all the offense it needed on Tuesday at Viking Field. 

Wickens played a punt from senior goalkeeper Macy Walters and raced past the Lakeland defense in the 54th minute for the game's only goal as the Vikings beat the Hawks 1-0 in an Inland Empire League match. 

“The ball took a nice bounce and Ava put a great touch on the ball and it created a breakaway,” Coeur d’Alene coach Andy Vredenburg said. “With Ava’s speed, she ran right past their centerbacks and made a great 1-v-1 against their keeper.” 

Coeur d’Alene (2-0, 1-0 IEL) travels to face Timberline High of Boise on Friday. 

“We started a little slow and didn’t have our game in the first half,” Vredenburg said. “In the second half, we started to win the physical battles and matched their energy. We had a lot of chances and our keeper made some big saves. It was nice to see the girls battle and put the first half behind them and step up in the second half.” 

Lakeland (0-1, 0-1) hosts Post Falls on Thursday.

SPIRIT LAKE — Lillie Ward scored for the Tigers in the loss to the Badgers in the season and Intermountain League opener for both schools at Timberlake High. 

Maddie Hart and Nolie Hiatt scored for Bonners Ferry, which is scheduled to host Grangeville on Sept. 5 

Timberlake travels to Grangeville on Saturday.

PRIEST RIVER — Senior Sofia Peppin scored four goals for the visiting Panthers in a shutout of the Spartans in the Intermountain League and season opener for both schools. 

“It’s always fun to finally play the first league game,” Coeur d’Alene Charter coach Stacy Smith said. “I’m pleased with how the girls adjusted to the long, thick grass surface and still connected some passes with enough pace on the ball. My upperclassmen did a great job in their roles of leading and playing by example while also being a positive voice on the field.” 

Coeur d’Alene Charter faces Timberlake on Sept. 3 at The Fields at Real Life in Post Falls.

RATHDRUM — Sophomore forward Rowan Wyatt recorded a hat trick for the Vikings in an Inland Empire League win over the Hawks at Sunrise Rotary Field. 

“We came out a little sluggish and disconnected,” Coeur d’Alene coach Robbie Harmelink said. “We used the halftime break to focus on connecting and the guys came out and played much better in the second half. We played a lot better in the second half, which was nice to see.” 

Junior Isaac Lowder had a goal and assist for Couer d'Alene, which travels to face Timberline High of Boise on Friday. 

“We were playing really well in the first half,” Lakeland coach Nick Haynes said. “Then we made a boneheaded mistake and they scored, then they got another one in the first half. We played well, but need to learn from our mistakes. Coeur d’Alene is a good, well-coached, organized team and they moved the ball really well.”

Lakeland travels to Post Falls on Thursday.
