FALL SPORTS PREVIEW: Bonners Ferry volleyball’s positive environment assists youthful squad
JACK FREEMAN | Hagadone News Network | UPDATED 3 months, 1 week AGO
Last season: 10-10 (2-0 in conference)
Coaches: Cynthia Cummings (head coach), Shania Gustafson (assistant coach), Paula Petesch (assistant coach)
Key returners: Taren Bateman, OH, jr.; Eva Willis, MB, jr.; AdleeMae Robles, DS, sr.
Key newcomers: Jaycee Bateman, S, fr.; Josie Rennie, DS, fr.; Sammi Cummings, S, so.
Outlook: Coming off an impressive state tournament showing, where they knocked off the No. 2 seed, the Badgers head into this season with an unproven roster. With only one senior on the team and four freshmen, Bonners Ferry is facing a tall task in a sport built on communication.
As the team grows into its own, head coach Cynthia Cummings said that the team is focused on creating a positive energy while setting the standards of hard work and integrity. AdleeMae Robles, the lone senior, has been a significant part of creating the culture while maintaining a high-level of play from the back row as a defensive specialist.
With the youth of the squad, the Badgers will have to lean on their juniors to step up and fill the void. Expect to see Taren Bateman continually making plays alongside Robles on the back line, while junior Eva Willis stars as the team’s middle blocker. Willis will be key for the Badgers with her role close to the net and facilitating the team.
Four freshmen join the fray with Jaycee Bateman stepping into the key setter role. Cummings said that she’s exemplified the team’s hard-working nature, putting in the effort to perfect a crucial position.
With only one other team in their subdivision, Bonners Ferry should make it back to state with a roster that has had time to gel. That should create a dangerous team late in the season who can compete with the best in 4A.
Coach’s comments: “This current period that we are in, it’s going to be possibly a growing year, but we are looking forward to continually working hard, putting in the effort day to day and basically the hard work that is needed to reach our goals.” - Coach Cynthia Cummings
On the team’s goals: "Successful to me is setting the standard of sportsmanship and what a good teammate looks like, accomplishing that is more important than our record and whether we make it to state.”
Most anticipated matchup: Volley for Care matchup against Timberlake
