COEUR d'ALENE — Fire engineer Dave Tysdal is "getting better and better each day," according to the latest update from the Coeur d'Alene Fire Department.

Tysdal has been recovering at a specialty rehab facility out of state since July 15 after previously being hospitalized with "severe" injuries at Kootenai Health following the June 29 shooting on Canfield Mountain.

Tysdal was shot once in the back during the "ambush-style" attack that claimed the lives of battalion chiefs Frank Harwood and John Morrison. The gunshot resulted in extensive injuries to the left side of his body, including spinal swelling, a collapsed lung and several shattered ribs.

In a social media post, CDAFD shared Thursday that though Tysdal is still unable to move his legs, his gunshot wound, clavicle, lungs and arm strength have been improving daily.

A photo shared along with the update showed Tysdal participating in physical therapy.

On behalf of the Tysdal family, CDAFD thanked the community and those who have offered their continued support from throughout the country.
