PREP BOYS BASKETBALL: Sandpoint assists way to season-opening win over Bonners Ferry

by MAX OSWALD
I grew up in the small town of Orwigsburg, Pa., where I resided all of my life before moving to Sandpoint. I attended Blue Mountain High School, where I participated in cross country and track and field, a sport that I ended up falling in love with. I went on to attend and run for DeSales University (with other brief stints at Susquehanna University and Elizabethtown College) and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in sport communication with a minor in sport management. I remember just how great it made me feel when I was mentioned in my hometown newspaper. I want to be able to give that feeling to every athlete in Bonner County, no matter how big or small their accomplishments are. As an athlete myself, I know how many hours of work are put in on a daily basis, and that hard work deserves to be recognized. It is my goal to cover as much of the Bulldogs, Spartans and Wampus Cats as I can. I want to work with every athlete, parent, coach, administrator and the community to ensure the best stories are published. | December 1, 2025 5:40 PM

Sandpoint 67, Bonners Ferry 45

SANDPOINT — Senior Logan Roos poured in a game-high 19 points, including Sandpoint's first seven of the contest, junior Knox Williams hit four of the team's seven three-pointers and netted 14 points of his own, and the Bulldogs assisted on 20 of their 25 made baskets in a 22-point season-opening win over the Badgers on Saturday night at Les Rogers Court.

Junior Derrick Chamberlain contributed 10 points as he cashed in on 6-for-8 shooting from the charity stripe on the day. Senior Caiden Gion chipped in eight points as did junior Brock Yarbrough for Sandpoint, which led 26-16 at intermission before building their lead up in the second half.

In the third, the Bulldogs, fueled by a Roos three-point play and back-to-back offensive rebounds and putbacks by Gion, outscored Bonners Ferry 15-7 and then erupted for 26 points in the fourth to seal the deal. Roos and Gion both tied for a team-high six rebounds in the winning effort.

Junior Logan Iverson came through with a three-point play of his own in the fourth frame and sophomore Asher Nieman connected for his first career varsity points with a three-pointer near the end of the quarter.

For Bonners Ferry, senior Sulay Abubakari scored eight of his 11 points in the fourth quarter and pulled down a game-high nine rebounds. Junior Jameson Cartwright-Kissee tallied a team-high 12 points, including three three-pointers, dished out four assists and came away with three steals for the Badgers, which outrebounded Sandpoint by a margin of 27-26. Junior Ty Schrock added six points, six rebounds and three assists for Bonners Ferry (0-1), which will travel to East Valley of Spokane on Tuesday for another non-league matchup.

In addition to his eight points, Yarbrough was busy getting teammates involved as he delivered a career-high seven assists in what was Sandpoint High head coach Will Love's first career win under the boys, and 100th career head coaching win between both the girls and boys programs. Williams had five assists and Iverson and senior Tyler Weisz found the open man three times apiece for the Bulldogs.

On defense, Roos swatted away two shots and Williams, Iverson and Yarbrough all had four steals each for the Bulldogs, which won their first season opener since the 2020-2021 campaign when they bested Timberlake by a score of 59-45. Sandpoint (1-0) will travel to Lewis & Clark of Spokane on Tuesday for another non-league affair.
