PREP BASKETBALL: Timberlake rolls in opener in Henry's debut as coach

SPIRIT LAKE — Senior Max Simpson scored 10 of his 17 points in the first quarter, and the Timberlake Tigers made Juston Henry’s debut as coach a winning one with a 68-42 victory over the visiting Priest River Spartans in nonleague play on Monday night.
“Max Simpson really controlled the paint and set the tone early,” said Henry, a 1992 Lakeland High grad.
Junior Wade Van Gundy and senior Brant Rush added 13 points each for Timberlake, which outscored Priest River 40-22 in the second half. Van Gundy hit three 3-pointers.
“For the first game the kids really came together and put up a well-balanced game,” Henry said.
Ian Lamanna scored a game-high 18 points for Priest River.
Timberlake plays host to Lakeland on Wednesday.

COEUR d’ALENE — Senior Jack Johnston scored 24 points as the host Royals defeated The Oaks in Mountain Christian League play in North Idaho Christian’s season opener at Holy Family Catholic School.
Senior Colton Malinauskas added 15 points for North Idaho Christian.
Brock Sherle scored a game-high 25 points for The Oaks, which won the Mountain Christian League and league tournament last season.
North Idaho Christian plays Spokane Classical Christian on Friday at 6:30 p.m. at The Courts at Real Life in Post Falls.

Chelsey Cate had 16 points, 11 rebounds and two blocked shots for North Idaho Christian (0-4, 0-1 MCL). Sydney Ellis had 10 points and Hollie Smith added nine rebounds and three blocks.
Lily Ott led The Oaks with 13 points.
